Ten years ago I owned one but I had to sell 'cause my economy. Now I bougth another D50 and I won't sell it any more.I'm always surprised over the crispy sounds it can deliver, a little minus for the sucking pianos and strings. This is the SYNTH; I used to compare new equipment to it," aha, this synth had something of the D50 sound...".It was almost worth to get through a 4.500 000 000 years of evolution just for to be able to manufacture a D50.

The D-50 is perfect for new age type smooth pad types of sounds which works with my music well. The only way to program your own sounds is to get a editor/ librarian program. I have one for the Amiga of all computers and it works really well to make some incredible sounds. I just recenly downloaded some new patches from a web site which make my D-50 like a brand new synth. The PG-1000 programmer is VERY confusing and weird to program with.
The aftertouch is AWESOME and the control of soloing sounds with aftertouch is really fun.
I agree that a lot of the non-pad type sounds really stink. Get an editor program and make your own.

Finally got a hold of one of these beasts, and I have to say, it has a sonic space all its' own. The action of the keyboard alone is worth the $300 to $500 you'll pay for it. Makes a wonderful controller, but better still, makes some wonderful sounds. The built in EQ gives you so much control of the resulting sound, that you'd think most current synths would incorporate it. While it's not great for everything (show me a synth that is) it does have a very identifiable sound.
The synthesizer side of the unit is brilliant. You can get some great pads/leads out of it with ease. And, yes, even with the PG-1000, it can be a rather confusing box to program on. But some of your worst mistakes can end up being your favorite patches. It can go from full on beef to thin and breezy. Holds it's own in the mix, whether it be out in front, or subliminal. A keeper for sure.

I think I was the 2nd person in Seattle to get a D-50 when they first came out. I feel this was the best synth I ever got (I still have it). Very expressive with aftertouch and control. Dump the stupid presets and little attack samples and you got a great synth. Many people love or hate the D-50, not much gray area. I think the people who hate it want a sampler, which it's not. If I could get another in good condition, I would in a second.
