Like Jason, I've also owned/used my U-220 since 1989. Some of the D-50 samples are getting a bit tired-sounding, but I still use the strings (w/ card), harp(card), and Jupiter brass in the studio-a lot-mixed with other things. There is one Hammond sound that has a really cool growling, low, Leslie sound. I put that in with a good Korg or Kurzweil sample, and it real makes the sound come alive. I keep threatening to sell it, but I just keep going back to it. The shakuhachi sample, although used to death in the 80s, is one of the best I've ever heard-bar none. Very useful in any MIDI set-up.

I love my U220 since I bought it in '89. I have used it in orchestra pit after
orchestra pit and the sounds still sound fresh and warm. It sounds wonderful when you layer its strings with those of the JV880. Pick one up if you see it!

I like it! (Except for the Sax patch!
Great Acoustic Piano, Strings, Choir!!!! :-)
Too bad it only had 6 parts (7 with the drum channel) :-(
I would really like a GM version with 16 channels!

This is a nice little workhorse synth (but don't work it too much, it's low on polyphony). Some have compared it to the Sound Canvass series, but I think that's an insult. I owned and SC55 and it was an awful little box. The U220 has some really strong sounds on it. And beyond all that you can pick 'em up for cheap. It fills out a system very nicely. No one's mentioned the accoustic guitar sound on it. It's very nice. No, it doesn't exactly sound real, but it has a unique sound all it's own. For all you Goth/Industrial people out there, it sounds quite a bit like the guitar sample used on "Ostia:The Death of Passolini" by Coil. And that's recommendation enough in my book. P.S. I am assuming that "4 out of 5" is a high mark. I certainly hope so as I've been reviewing other synths on that scale.

Forget to mention how great the Latin Percussion sounds are!
