I used to play, well actually still play the guitar i've gone from lead guitar to keyboardist. I love the JX-305, The more equipment you have the more sound's you gonna have. You don't need to have all those expensive software's or synth's coming from a guitarist which has load's of guitar pedal's, pedals just sitting there looking pretty collecting dust, I ended up hooking them up to my JX-305 an it just gave a whole new feel on the roland, I've come up with some sound's i haven't heard some keyboardist or synth do yet it's hard to explain it but it take's alot of pedal's and turning bunch of knob's and editing. There's alot of unique sound's you can make staring you in the face.

I just bought the JX-305 about a month ago. I am compleatly new to the world of electronic music, hell creating music at all. Do I like the JX-305 so far... sort of. Can I use the JX-305... not really! It is fairly easy to use, and the onboard sequencer is simple to use. But at the same time, I thinks it's a large pain in the ass to get it to do what you want. I think that I need sequencing software for my laptop. Visually seeing it might help. But I'm sure that if you know how to get the most out of a synth, you could probably create some cool peaking and tweeking, moving and mixing, beats.... Would I still buy it knowing what I know now... I might be tempted to look into the Electribes instead...

I am a hobbyist until I can be professional and quit my day job, I just purchased the jx last friday I got it for about 700 from skips music. I am VERY impressed. I am new at all this so it is very complex however i made my first "patch" the other night. It is very exiting to have completed that. the manual is very extensive. I think all you who are having problems it may be because the manual is not in "laymens" terms. This is standard for Roland manuals because they are aimed at professionals. If you know what all the lingo means like pitch,tempo,note,patch,pattern,measure,swing, etc. then its easier to understand the manual. so Im just goin to get some books on music theory so can understand it. I would reccomend this synth. Oh yeah another comment on the "ORIGINALITY'" the patch I made was entirely from sounds in the user bay and I changed the sounds with the arrpaggiator andother options. Its Entirely easy to maky your OWN sounds on this thing. there is no excuse for lack of originality here,.will send in more comments soon !! (sorry for typoes im at work and typing fast!!)

For a person learning the ropes of electronic music, or someone who just wants to mess a bit with "Dance"(whatever that means..) music...it's a good buy. For the money and what you are getting..you can't really complain for it's current price I personally would not use it..but I am beyond the hobbyist level now.(I am getting ready to work in a studio and do professional production), so to me..it would not be handy. butif I were 16, and could not afford all the toys, and was just learning.. I would buy it..then sell it to another person who was just starting when I outgrew it.

For Hip Hop, Rap, House or Techno music, the Roland 305 synth is the Bomb! but for Rock, R&B, Pop or Classical music, this synth is not for you! the sound are basically Lo Fi and very very usable for Groove Music, If you are a producer or musician looking for basically todays trendy sounds, then this 305 is for you, but if you are looking for clean with wide variety of the standard sounds then you need a basic classic type of synth, this machine is for those who wants to GROOVE! and GROOVE you will with this machines potential, so for $680 dollars what I paid for mine this machine has some great potential, because I can crank out Hip Hop, with just this machine along for well into the 21st century! If you are not into GROOVE music, then you better shell out some more money for a higher priced keyboard that will basically just give you a more cleaner sound of instruments you might not find any use for.
