Did I forget to mention that the JX includes a fully programmable OS, and that Roland have NOT previewd its full potential for new users of the JX?, even older users will be amazed at what they can do with it from production start to finish.

Dedicated track effecting? = I dont believe thats listed

Multi analog waveforming = I dont believe thats listed?

Quick menu browsing = I dont believe thats listed?

ADSR filter manager = I dont believe thats listed?

Patch arrangement with original custom menu installation updates? = I dont believe thats listed?

Wave & Analog scoping = Something which even the manual don't talk about...

User arp memory?, its amazing what you can do when you hold down more than 1 menu!

Hack this synth and your get results. It has alot more of course, ALOT more. Temp is a great workspace, 1 little tip I will give away, if your working on a producing in Temp, hold down shift, push INC and turn the dial to user memory, still holding shift select a user memory, return to TEMP and save, and your track will automatically be managed to that number. This was ref for the person who had problems with song / track updates.

Please email me if you need help with this board in any way.

Wonderful machine! Way under-rated for what it can do, and YES it IS beautiful too! I got one in 1999 and sold it later in 2000. What a dumb mistake! I really miss my JX305 and am looking for one right now!! They are a rock solid bargain at todays prices, so I am pleasantly surprised by that and glad I wont have to sell my car to buy one of these. :-)

Everyone has their own review and heres mine. The JX-305 IS!!! a GREAT!!! SYNTH!!! which CAN be highly DECENT when CREATING ORIGINAL MATERIAL!!

Does it really matter what other people think?, your the owner of this thing. If it makes you happy, and you get the job done, screw what everyone else thinks?.

Some people will like it, others won't. Some people can afford a mercedes, others can't. Most people are happy with a car which has breaks, an engine and runs like you want without problems. Just like that state, This gorgeous blue synth gets me through.

and..

"Roland get me through"

This little purple beast highlights Roland's strange habit of building interesting and capable gear and then marketing it at children. So much hate is dished out upon Roland's 'Groove' instruments by angry adolescents who who try them in the store and aren't won over immediately. I feel much of the hate is undeserved. This synth has its problems, but no synth does everything perfectly. If you buy it for the right reasons, you will be a very happy music-maker.

In the JX-305, you get a synth workstation for not much moolah. Sure, it's no Triton and the sounds take some effort to bring up to date, but you're looking at one-fifth the cost (at least that's the case here).

It makes a fantastic control synth with its nine tweaking knobs, pitch/mod wheel and 61-key layout. The performance-oriented sequencer is a breeze, although greater timbrality would have been nice. Careful use of the Realtime Pattern Sequencing function, in conjunction with sequenced riffs, can effectively double the timbrality though. Realtime, step and microscope editing are all simple.

The presets are many but rubbish, with a few highlights (eg C32 Rise Pad), so this machine requires some dedication to maintain freshness. That said, the patch editing options are vast. I've used the device for 18 months and there's still some patch parameters I've yet to fiddle with. Editing through the 2-line LCD screen can be tedious but, ultimately, rewarding. Effects are standard Roland fare.

Other functions are generally welcome and useful. The arpeggiator is flexible and makes a great way to start new ideas. MIDI implementation seems solid, although I haven't pushed it very hard yet. An annoyance is the lack of multiple audio outs, which rules out the use of external FX on individual parts.

In all, I'd say this is a great unit. If you're on a budget, into electronica, enjoy plenty of live tweaking options, want on-board sequencing and need something with keys, this is the unit for you. It can take a long time to get to know the deeper aspects of the JX-305, but it's worth it. Buy it for its part in your musical dreams, not to impress your mates with the 'Groove' sticker. With some effort and patience you will extract great things from this wonderful instrument.
