I bought one used (obviously) in 95 for $50. I tried to sell it to a guy across country, and when he got it, it did not work (the heads would not turn). He sent it back, and all I did was clean the heads and it worked! We have sort of a "Christine" relationship together. It is great for guitar and drums - especially when it feeds back with that ultimate, infinite echo. It will never leave my studio just based on the fact that it looks cool and people are amazed at the analog tape drive.

Great machine. I've owned a few, but the one I have now is full of wow and flutter, though I'd never get it fixed cause it creates these great sequenced loops of short notes. Basically it makes music by itself, without having to put it into self-oscillation or anything. It works best when you feed it percussive sounds, single note synth or guitar. And the tape ribbon's are really easy to find. Portishead use about six of them.

The RE-201 is great. I picked mine up for $210.00 and it's been worth every penny. I've seen them go as high as $400, but that's rare and quite overpriced. Usually, in the classifieds, they average from $175 - $250. I use my on my Polysix and sometimes on vocals and it really makes a big difference. Short percussive and blips and beeps work best in the Space Echo. Love twisting the knobs to get weird sci-fi sounds too. One thing I've learned about the machine is that the tapes (if they break and sometimes they do) are easy to replace -- just break open an 8-track cassette or buy one at a thrift store for a buck and make a 20' loop or so of tape and rethread it through the machine. Works like a charm.
