I've had the XP-50 since it was reviewed in Keyboard. That would be, what, five or so years. Though I've aquired a lot of equipment since, I still love my Roland. It would be awesome if Roland took this sound engine and crossed it with a user interface that encouraged intuitive programming. The sequencer is quite decent, and for some time it was the only one I was using, and I still do for the occasional gig.

One of the best synths I've ever had. If you get to master this beast, you wouln't need anything else. If u get a triton and this synth, you'll be in heaven.

Hi well this was my first time into using a work station and god do I wish id used one in the first place!. I was messing around with analog for the last year and got lost in it all. All the analog hype is bullshit. This thing can produce sounds that are outstanding!. Lush Pads & Strings, sound effects. I hate the wind stuff in most synths but this one is so good at them I quite like those too!. Dont buy a D-50 there hyped up alot and to be honnest there only good at strings. Theres a cool D-50 Stack patch. There is one sound I use for a trademark but im not telling!..Go buy it now! it should cost more!. Theres only one sound this thing cant do and thats my Roland JP4's arp bass preset..maybe I should get the vintage synth expansion board?..I forget to say that you can expand this thing 4 times and unlimited sound creation what more do you need? a room full of analogs? which still cant quite cut it? or an Xp-50 that does (very amazingly) ''the lot in one box''.

Pat Garcia a part-time user from Sacramento, CA writes:
This synth is an overall great unit. There's only one complaint I have and thats with the cheaply made stiff key action of the keyboard. It is terrible. My old KORG DS-8 has a much better key action than the XP-50.

Ease of Use: 5 not that easy.you might confuse using sequencer, tone shaping.XP 60-80 is better.

Features: 7 good expending capibilities.RPS rocks.transposing is well thought.sequencing functions are pro enoungh, better than Korg, unlike some KORG's,do write transposition to songs(GM or not).but when you read direct from disk, some flaws come out.

Expressiveness/Sounds: 8 1080 quality ,industry standrad for that time(1995-98).piano,strings,ac gutars,bass are good.brass,rock organs,el guitars and ofcourse reed (like Sax)sucks.You can't beat Korg's Sax,can you?drums -not punchy.effects -so so.

Reliability: 6 light but not as hard as other gear.some cheap plastic parts.

Customer Support: N/A ok

Overall Rating: 7 I exchanged with my Korg X3 since I need a key with sequencer+direct disk play. Was it worth it?not so.the drums sucked, the keys are not as reliable as Korg gear, low performance memory(64),hard to learn sequencing, some bad or jumpin'direct disk play.good pianos and more sounds that Korgs but when it's time to solo(espicially live)it is a weak one.good and clean output for studio use but not too good for live.
