I purchased mine 12/97, at first I couldn't figure out the sequencer. Very frustrating. Then I called Roland to vent. They sent me "supplemental notes" in the mail and that really got me going. These notes are clear, step by step instructions that the manual lacks. I highly recommend these. Soon after I recorded a 7 song demo 95% XP-50. The rest was live drumming. To hear, go to: http://www.mp3.com/joeshellfish Sure the memory is somewhat limited, but only 1 of about 30 songs I've done required additional memory. The key is to have a few patterns pasted into a song, then add leads over them. I would buy an XP-60 to replace the 50, but instead I'll purchase recording equipment. The 50's are really dropping price wise, so for what they're selling for, I'd recommend buying one now. The sound engine is the same as the XP-60 and 80, plus the expansion boards keep it up to date. I'm very satisfied with this work station.

I've just recently laid my hands on this XP-50. I picked it up for a snap as it was broken. It had been to a party and had an encounter with Coca cola (lots of it, and probalby other stuff too). The result: a burned power supply and lot's of corroded switches and keyboard contacts. Beeing an electronic engineer I decided to give it a bash and bought it( $200,- isn't expensive isn't it). I got it working and all buttons are fien again, it just requiered 10 new switches, 3 springs, some power supply parts and 100(97 to be precise) hours of TLC. It sounds good and plays good. but I have one problem, No manual. Is anyone willing to send it to me as a PDF file, or a copy by mail? Thanks a lot!
It's a great synth and does all the bread and butter work the JV1080 is famous for( after all it's the same thing inside). I am going to get a few expansion boards for it, but first that manual. I've been playing around to program it, and it's failry easy once you get used to the logic of the thing but I have one other question, how do I store a patch, I can't seem to find a 'store' or 'enter' button, but perhaps I'm getting daft.....

Well, I decided to post this review out due to the mixed opinions by some of the users out there. Well, this board was one of the best sounding boards around. I still use it as a stand alone unit for quick compositions, when I don't want to turn everything else on. It moves with you everywhere and can have access to thousands of sounds when fully expanded. But in terms of a recording gear, Roland was smart enough to come out with the XP60 and the 80. Unlike it's sucessors, the XP50 lacks output. Only and Left and Right just will not cut it in studio. The sequencers is only good for well, like I said a scratch pad. But aside from that this is a great sounding board. I don't know what some of the losers are complaining about noises abd stuff. Roland means sonic and quality. If one can7t deal with some of the feed backs don7t play synths any more.

I like this board. It's great for studio but not for live performance since it's just not dynamic enough to cut through. As far as blending, it can't be beat. Other keyboard tend to dominate a mix but the Xp-50 can get right in there and fill in the cracks without shadowing the mix. I like the sequencer as a basic scratch pad for ideas. I'll admit the interface takes a while to learn but after that you'll be clicking buttons so quick that you're on auto pilot.
The sounds may be thin but they are quirky. Quirky has more character than just a stagnant fat sound that just sits there and crowds a mix.

This is my first synth. Overall, I love it. I play in a praise band and get a lot out of it. As others have expressed, the manual is a joke. This keyboard really requires a lot of digging in and gettin' dirty to learn what it's potential is.
