Easy editing, massive sonic potential and cheap.
This really is a first-class synth. The sound is incredibly stable; even moreso than the pure digital path of the Korg Prophecy. The ability to combine several waveforms at once really extends this synth's abilities. While the envelope section is a tad basic, once you get to grips with the modulation routings you can really make it sing.
The @Juno-1 is easily capable of producing excellent impressions of all your favourite analogue-y sounds as well as a few surprises.

Do you need a synth to make trancey leads or basses? Perhaps a sweeping, simple pad? Go get it bwoy!

I was recently told that the Alpha Junos were designed with experimental jazz musicians in mind, so that should tell you alot. I own an Alpha Juno1 and at one time the Juno 2 also. Get one or the other soon, because people are starting to catch on. I'll never get rid of my alpha, in fact, I prefer it to the Juno106 cause it doesn't sound as bouncy and uniform as the 106. I've heard people say that because it's a 1 osc + sub synth that it sounds thin, but don't believe it! This thing can deliver some seismicly meaty basses, and the strings and pads are simply the slickest most beautiful in the world! The keyboard on the alpha 1 isn't velocity or aftertouch responsive, but the synth engine itself responds to veloc/aftrtch! The only real weakness I can think of with these synths is that the outer shell doesn't seem too sturdy, so a good hard shell case would be good if you wanna take it out to play alot. Also, look out for a synth called the HS-10 a.k.a. Synth+100, it's the same synth as the alpha 1 and 2. There's been one sitting in a nearby pawnshop for months now, and if someone doesn't grab that sucker soon, I AM! I've heard people describe this synth as merely "okay" after poking around the presets... Obviously they haven't tried tweaking it at all! The Juno series synthesizers probably offer the most bang-for-the-buck out of any analogue synthesizer out there, and the Alpha Junos are NO exception. Its sound characteristics are different than the famed 106's, but by NO means is it inferior! It has a fat sound all of its own! It is also extremely versatile.. You can get soft mellow sweeping strings, loud cracking leads, and i've even seen people tweak it, send it through a fuzz box, and get a DAMN good 303 sound out of it! Some people don't like the alpha-dial as opposed to lots of knobs and sliders.. And I'll agree, knobs are quicker to edit, but with the plethora of computer patch editors out there, WHO CARES?? The sound of the synth, in my opinion, is way more important than several dozen knobs on the top. (plus, you can always pick up a PG-300...) :-)

Great synth, easily worth the cost, so long as you pay less than 400(US).
Great pads and drones, good TeeBee impressions, and you can get some insanly cool squelches out of it if you try.
BAD as a controller keyboard, but, them's the breaks. Pity it didn't have seperate pitch and mod wheels, but, what can you do?
Distort it, usually through a desk, or, IF you can get your hands on it, a BOSS hyper fuzz (FZ-2??) pedal, which makes it as acid(y) as you could want for practical use.
