I have been reading most of the reviews posted here and the general opinion is that it makes an excellent sequencer, has lots of pros as a drummachine but you shouldn't expect to get any real nice synth sounds out of it.
I agree with all this, but must add that if you play around with the knobs for a while, you should be able to improve the sounds big time. Okay they are still not top of the bill, but they are good enough for live-performance as during performance the sound will be blurred by the PA anyway. When recording you might want to look for some more expensive machinery.
Maybe it is not the best piece of equipment around, but it's cheap, and playing with it is certainly more fun than just watching the telly.

how can you believe that the 505 does not put the 303 to shame??? there are so many other toys out on the market that are better values for the money than the 303. i'd rather spend the additional money for the 505 just because "it puts the 303 to shame." but don't listen to me, what do i know?!? does the chemical brothers, moby, armand van helden, prodigy, crystal method use an MC-303? i highly doubt it!! this machine would have been decent if roland only added a memory card slot!! fact is that roland has included memory cards on some of their older and crappier machines, why not the 303 then!!

Once again, Ady, I beg to differ with your trivial remarks. I'd like you to find a cheaper 8 part sequencer with a drum sequencer with real time muting, RPS, and a great Arpeggio generator.
It was never built to be an "ultimate" (as you quote it) machine. Anyone who thinks of it as that is a fool, not Roland. It's an excellent stepping stone for those who are sick of the mouse movements in Rebirth, or is looking for a little sketch pad.
Go back to your cave of "Groovebashing". It's gotten so old now.

Come on, I'm sure most of the people who reviewed this piece of equipement are beginners who know nothing about sound synthesis yet...As a result theyr are convinced this box is the ultimate tool for electronic music. Just go listen to other synths, and you'll realize how limited and crappy this instrument is!!!!!!

I don't know how you feel the 303 is put to shame by the 505, but if you look at the price difference, you'll see the 303 is a much greater value. True, they are both toys, but for a beginning synthesist they can be very valuable.
