I enjoy my MC-303. I read every forum post on here about it and it seems 30/70 (against).
For something made back in 1996, sure it's not going to compare to anything new out there but what it all comes down to is the person behind the machine and what innovative music you can produce with it.
I use it along with my Electribes and the MC-303 has some pretty cool grooves and beats to it. Sure, many of the sounds are updated but again, it depends on the person if they can use it to their advantage.
Last, shop around. I wouldn't pay full price for it because you can get a Korg EM-1 or something else.

All You Euro-trash flamers. I have been an artist from Detroit for 18 years. Hey didn't Detroit start techno. Anyone who says any instrument can't be used by itself has some serious inferiority problems. My balls slapping against your chin can be an instrument by itself(its not the instrument, its the asshole behind it). Great instrument for people with lots of CREATIVITY and a LIMITED BUDGET. I give lessons with it and the response is great. still use it myself in all my sets. It lays a great foundation and underlies most of my repetitive Detroit Tech beats (English hate repetitiveness, it confuses them thats why they made house out of techno) but it derails the beats great. A must have for any techno enthusiast or beginner

I just picked my 303 used. I should tell you this is my first "box" so I'm new to the game. I find myself reading the manual more than most of my textbooks when I was in school...rather deep. I agree the sounds are very limited but with the step sequencing I am just now starting to pound out some hip-hop beats which is what I primarily listen to. I hope to buy a sampler to link to it and get some better things happening. It took me 4 years to get good at guitar so I don't expect to master these kinds of instruments overnight either.....peace

I bid on my 303 on e-bay and got it for about $200 plus shipping and I have absolutely no regrets. I've been running it thru my bass amp and those drum sounds'll knock you flat! Fun fun fun. Haven't had any problems with the sequencer, it's kinda hard to use though--step recording is mind-boggling at first, but gets a bit easier in time. Most of the presets seem outdated, but there's still lots of fun sounds to use.

I just picked one of these little boxes (I will refrain from calling it a synth) the other day and was pleasantly surprised. I originally had the preconception these were crappy preset boxes with very little power produced for the masses of people who have no talent and want to make techno. Unfortunately it is a preset box, but quite a few of the sounds are interesting and quite useable. I've heard some people complain that the 909/808 drums are not very good, but I was able to get a nice sounding 909 beat coming out of my little amp, the 808 sounds are a little lacking I must say, but if you're buying this machine for those drum kits just buy rebirth instead. People have complained about the filter but again I found it wasn't half bad (I should mention I have owned an all analog MC-202 among other things so I do know a bad filter when I hear one).Yes it does jump values when the dial is in the wrong place as most digital filters do, but if you're careful you can avoid this. The arpeggiator is incredible on this thing and I've just barely begun to scratch the surface on it. This is a powerful little box, so don't underestimate it. I have to say I resent people saying things like "it's a piece of garbage" or "it's a toy". It certainly is not. It's all in how you use it. Some people will fall right into the interface and have no problem creating interesting music, while others will find themselves hitting a brick wall. It's all a matter of preference, so before you go off ranting and raving about how much the gear sucks, take another look through the manual and you might find that it really isn't as shallow as you thought.
