I came across this little black box of tricks in a music shop 1983.....i pressed one of the keys down and then had my head blown off by a thundering gritty bass sound. I then picked myself up off the floor and was heard to say..... "well.....this is it!"
This synth is the coolest mono synth ive ever come across. I have found no other synth that has the same level of sharp attcking anologue grit! Ok the construction quality is nothing special....but hay you bought it for the sound, right?!
Owners of the Pro-One are COOL.....so there!

One of the best monos of all time. The sounds are crazy and very cool. Great sound possibilities. Mine's never broken down in 10yrs of ownership. Miles better than a minimoog and as good as an odyssey. I've got all three synths in my studio. Natty little sequencer. Great TB sounds and howling leads. Great general base and sound effects. Well worth the money , although all monos are generally overpriced. Nice prophet 5 look to it with all that wood! IMO few monos are worth 5 points. This baby always brings a smile to my face. For that reason I'll give it 5!

One of the worst constructed synths ever. Regardless of having a Rev. 1.2 board, the synth itself is still cheaply made. You have these little pegs which suspend the board and 20 years after being manufactured, they have the tendency to snap off. Also, I got a Pro-One which has the cheap keys (ie. a little piece of plastic from the key makes contact with a spongie pad which then makes contact with a little plastic computer paper).
The sound however is amazing. I have a decent amount of analogue gear in my studio (TB-303, SH-101, TR-808, TR-909), yet this piece has the most ANALOGUE sound, meaning has all those little quirks in the sound. The oscillators buzz like there's no tomorrow. Tons and tons of depth. It can sound like pure electricity shooting out! The fact that it's a dual VCO synth also makes it a plus, this is where the Pro-One excelled over most Roland analogues (SH-101, Juno-106, etc...)which just had a single VCO yet with mixed waveforms.
I have to control it via my SH-101 because of the poor keys, yet the sound quality is amazing. I just wish they had invested more time into giving the board a better internal + key construction.

the pro-one has a sound all of its own.even between two different pro-ones!i have many synths and love this board.it can produce great basses and really wacky noises.it has great modualtion control and its filters sound excellent.the only problems i can see is that sci really took some serious short cuts in making these..thin cheap plastic case and cheap keys that have a terrible feel.and the pro-one feels like it weighs 2 pounds,so dont drop it!..if you have a membrane style keyboard its really hard to trigger notes sometimes.if your gonna get one,get the j-wire and itll work much better...i have three of these and really have a hard time deciding to get rid of any.if you want to get the most out of it ,id recommend installing a midi in port.then you can use a much better feeling synth to control it and have all those great pro-one sounds.i see the prices of these synths starting to go up,and after hearing the sounds it makes..i see why.but paying over $550 is getting a lil crazy...

Extremely adjustable. You can tweak and link just about anything you might want to. Good for experimenting with/learning about sound modulation. Great sound. Let down by the tacky keyboard and 'could be better' build quality.
