The AN1X definitely sounds warm and organic. It's capable of these subtle, thick, playable sounds. Playable in the sense of reacting to aftertouch, velocity and technic in a way that is very musical. The sound just has that certain organic feel to it. It's capable of rich analog sounds that until just recently I haven't found in another analog synth. I've been wondering what analog of the past might sound like this, until I finally got my hands on a CS-60. That was it! The AN1X can sound like a CS-60, and I would imagine a CS-80. It has the organic, musical quality. I also found that to get the beauty out of a CS-60, you really have to work it. You have to add subtle modulations and aftertouch, AND you have to play it right. When you do it's absolute beauty. The AN1X has this tonal quality to it. It really is an underated synth.

Mike Geary a hobbyist user from England writes:
Was lucky enough to pick up an an1x through e-bay which forced the sale of my long-suffering Cs1x.The Cs1x was resigned to the role of control synth as the sounds (although pretty good for the price) can only be taken so far . The An1x on the other hand creates sounds with almost limitless possibilities . As far as house/techno/ambient sounds go, every thing it does seems convincing . Use the editor to really get the most out of it as interface is not as "hands on" as a true analogue put the noises that come out the other end are more than a match . Yamaha quality , affordable but will become a synth you don't want to let go as it sounds BOSS!!!!!!

I Love, love, love this synth. As unique as the mid-eighties hybrids such as @Juno, Ensoniq sq80, etc. Like no other VA Ive heard, including the great sounding ION, the AN1x is actually warm sounding. It is also packed to the brim with features, you wouldnt believe the things it can do. EVERYBODY that makes ANY kind of electronic music would enhance their production with this piece around. It sounds so good and is so versatile. Yes, getting the board expansion for the newer yamahas is also an option, its prophet 5 and then some.

One of those modest and honest people from Down under writes:
Da psy-trance machine, even better than the original TB-303, IMO. Well suited for all kinds of electronic music, as it really hasn't got any limitations. In addition to all kinds of phat dance voices, there is also great organs, brass, strings, etc, to be found. It sounds very analog, I agree. In this respect, I think it beats the crap outta the competition (Novation, Virus, Nord Lead, aso). It is long time discontinued, but if you own another Yamaha (2000 or newer) there is a board that uses largely the same technology that can be added. It sure isn't a S+S synth, even if it looks like the CS1x. If you want analog and versatile, you should check the AN1x out.

JayC trippin D from Outerspace & then the world writes:
So you think,... ok, heres an oldie from 1997 when VA was a new thing and processors were slow... and, yes, it looks like 15 pounds of cheap plasticy crap, but dont be fooled; its enormously great sounding. Buy one if you can find one, is my advice. Its already a classic much like the JP-8000, but sounds more analogue. Some say it sounds very prophet 5, and I do agree, esp in dual mode (when the ten 2 osc voices become 5...): rounded, sublime and phat, and...unlike the original in this respect; it has stable tuning. But theres so much more to the story, velocity & aftertouch, a ringmodulator, a bunch of good FX (its Yamaha, after all), morphing between two parts, a VERY advanced programming matrix, arpeggiator and a great analogue-like sequencer, etc. It has modular capabilities IMO, no joke. The only gripe is the somewhat stepping cutoff-knob esp audible with high resonant settings. But then again this adds to the character of this synth, and it doesnt really bother anyone except those trance-freaks that wants everything nice and clean. If youre one of those, I suggest you buy a glassy Novation or a Virus instead. The AN1x is for the true originals out there. Once you start programming it, it becomes your own, just like with the old analogue beasts. This, the MS2000 and the Alesis Ion are the VAs coming closest to sounding real analogue. I have a few of the latter type too, so I really should know.
