Hi, hopeing to get another AN1x soon, had my hands on one years ago, and little did I know then how much I'd want one now. We gave ours back for lack of drum sets, but now I have plenty, and so miss the rest of what the AN1x was that I had to come here and comment. Read several of the last posts, and noticed a want of an updated version of the AN1x. I'll just say dream on. Someone mentioned yammy listend to the RS7k owners, which they may have, but I've noticed yamaha don't seem to give much care into discontinued products. The yahoo RS forum has been trying to get heard for a year now by yamaha, and it don't look very promising. I do hope they learn, and find a way to continue the line of X products, and even the QY line would be nice to see again, but with most newer and updated lines, they find a way to engineer out some of the best features in past gear. If an updated product is made, my request is to not just most of good stuff included from previous synths, but have it all, everything plus the new features. Whys that so hard to do?

The funny thing is (tells something of filters) that AN1x has made the best TB-emulation I have ever heard coming from VA(I have owned the most of VAs) with one oscillator. Not many are interested.. but after 5 years I have finally made great lead sounds for my music (which at first I didn't get). Pads are amazing and synth strings as well. When I many years ago used arpeggios/seq it didn't synced well to midi clock. If there just be LFO sync to midi it would be the perfect tool for me.

This synth is AWESOME! When I bought my AN1x in early 2003 I was surpised how powerful it is sound-wise - this is very capable synth with very rich, authentic (Prophetic ;) ), analogish sound that blows many new competitors away in many areas IMHO. Easy to mix. It has nice filters with its own character. Also AN1x is a very good controller with the nice synth touch. Together with An1xEdit free software editor you'll get a very powerful subtractive (and simple FM) synthesis possibilies that lying far away from that simple "fart" and "whistle" sounds (AN1x can do it veeery goood too, if needed ;) )...
I'm a really happy AN1x owner - it's godsend to have this compact, powerful and convenient "digital version" of two vintage Prophet-5. Total inspiration and analog heaven. I love my "Blue beast"...

What's the best in AN1x in my opinion? It has so much great stuff and many ways to make sounds It haven't bore me yet. There is many "limited" synths I bore too soon. I have JP-8080 and sound is definitely different and AN1x kills it in many sound categories. I also have Q Rack and XT and their sound is very different too, AN is more "analogue" sounding.

Dave is right.............an1x has better sounds than all those hyped up euro keyboards like novation, waldorf, access or those japanese keyboards like jp8000 and ms2000...
I do have a few gripes about the an1x that I hope yamaha will follow up in the next release of the an series (hopefully 2004 namm)...
1). polyphony...10 is not great for today's age of analog software synthesizers; atleast 32 is needed. 2). multitimbrality...2?? lol, not bad for 1997 (when an1x was released), but today....in order to make a good trance track, you need around 4 an1x to carry around!!! ... as dave mentioned, 8 multitimbrality is needed in today's age. 3). vocoder: jp8000 has a vocoder, microkorg has a vocoder...i think yamaha should fit in a decent vocoder. 4). voices cut off when they change...as a user mentioned, this is quite disappointing, when you use rs7000 or other sequencers with inserts for program change .... voices need to fade away instead of cutting off. 5). yamaha an1x, though has the best analog-like sound, needs a few more sound routing options, as 3 VCOs instead of 2, etc. and more lfo options, etc. 6). Arpeggiator is limited; User programmable arpeggiator will be great. (The step sequencer in the an1x is pretty good). 7). Last but not the least, a usb interface, a breath controller (like the cs6x) mlan and other modernities might prove helpful.
Yamaha listened to their customers big time with giving a new update for the rs7000 (OS 1.2), and releasing motif ES (the best supersynth currently on the market)> I hope they do the same to the an1x and release a new version....
