This is a great sounding synth. It sounds similar to the Roland JP-8000 but with a bigger and better feeling keyboard and a lower price. It also has fewer waveforms and no vocoder or external input. The impressions of various analog keyboards are very convincing, much more so than any sample based synth. It also has the ability to produce unusual digital sounding tones too. It can be made to scream, squeal and create bubbly sounds as well as some smooth strings and pads. The construction and the user interface are not too bad (considering the bargain used prices) but could be better. The 16 note sequencer and the ability to record and store knob movements are wonderful features to have. I really like this board but I seem to be having trouble with the volume. It seems much too low. Apart from the master volume control and the VCA volume control is there another way to adjust the volume? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

The AN1x is the most underrated VA ever. Has good poliphony, amazing sounding capabilities, it's warm and wicked.... programming sounds can be fun (after learning how to deal with the matrix) and the results can be mind blowing. It has only 8 knobs but each knob has up to 7 parameters.... which would have resulted in 56 knobs if built that way !!
I was away from it while playing with some soft synths... but I'm glad I'm rediscovering it again. I've had my AN1x since 1998 and we have been through a lot, it even has a ciggarrete burn in one of the keys... I will never sell it.
It's an amazing synth !

For those who are reading these reviews and thinking should I buy An1x or not, or should I buy Virus instead. I had Virus B same time I had AN1x and I can say both has so much other don't. Virus has much sounds and stuff but with AN1x you can layer sounds, make so much different stuff you couldn't dream with Virus. If you program AN1x well, it can make great sounds only with 2 oscs, so you have full 10-voice poly. Use dual function to make more complex sounds (4osc, 4lfo, 2 filters+2 hipass filters, 4envelopes, tons of modulations, fm-sync stuff etc). Buy Virus, Waldorf (micro) Q or other for more multitimbral and then AN1x but don't sell your AN1x to get virus etc if you like the sound of it...I don't see any sence...

I bought my AN1x new in 1997 for 899.95 and think it's the best 'analog' synth I've ever owned and I've owned a few (SH-101, Juno-106, JX-10, Supernova 2 to name a few) because it's sounds, especially leads, are really cutting. I never intend to sell it and use it in every song I write. The 'morph' function has produced some exquisite sounds and make it so versatile on stage. I love the ribbon controller and modulation matrix and think the aftertouch is great, really expressive, especially compared to some synths where it feels like you need weight-training for your fingers to coax small changes from the AT - assign it to sync depth for some grat sounds. I love my AN1x and will probably buy another at some point. Nuff said!
