The AN1x is one great piece of VA, if you got your hands on one during the blowout sales like me then I have to congratulate you, it was the best bargain ever!
This thing does everything you can imagine, get a sampler as companion and that's all you ever need (in theory, but aren't we all gear sluts ;).
As mentioned before this thing is fat, 2 osc. which can be put into unison and mono(even fatter) and then you can put the two scenes into dual unison mode and get 4 osc in unison&mono, now that I call crazy. :)
The control matrix is also the best ever, editing the sounds is really easy, I've heard people complain about it being hard to understand but unless they were total newbies they had no business owning an analog synthesizer anyway!
Also, this is *the* VA pad machine, period.

there is also a superb AN1X-editor by Gary Gregson. It helps you to get over the difficulties of the interface. It's FREE, but adds a LOT!

the sweetest sounds i've ever heard coming from any VA. the sync/fm possibilities add a lot of possibilities and detail to the synth. At 26.880bfr(=560$) i recommend it to anyone looking for a decent 5-octave controller keyboard with velocity and aftertouch-capabilities which can also produce the aforementioned wide variety of sounds (even cold and harsh metallic or wind sounds, apart from traditional analog sounds are there if you care to program them). of course it lacks 2 to 4 parts, 6 to 10 note polyphony and a user-friendly interface but you can always add that later in the form of a Nord Rack when you have the money. (Or you could get a simple sampler in conjunction or stream audio on your computer...) No machine (however pricy) brings it all in one go. But definitely a great synth to start with. Also, read S.O.S aug'97 on AN1X and Waldorf Q-review on Intermusic/Future Music. You'll be surprised...and you won't let it pass on you when you happen to still bump into one.

It is a great synth with PHATT sounds . Easy to use .I find it better than the nordlead 2, jp 8000.You can create any sound you wish . Todey you can buy used AN1X for 450$-550$. So find one and get into electronic.

Damn so I've been tweaking some sounds through my computer and the knobs using the Matrix, Free EG and Damn, it's chubby, chubby than the lady next door...
And oh I made some kicks and they do sound like the 909 or the Ravolution 309 kicks...
