A great little synth. I've been using my mate's cs for a couple of weeks and I've been really impressed. The variety of possible sounds is amazing. The amp/speaker feature is a bonus as is its ability to run off batteries. I'm selling my korg770 to finance my purchase. Is the mk2 that much better than the mk1? A great little buy from a great synthesizer company!

Oh the Rarity. I just got in my CS01 today. I got it off ebay for 150. I'm in love. I've got my eye out for the breath controler now. OK, now for the specs... You might think this is a PCM synth- like all the old cheesey pre-midi things.. but that is incorrect. This is a Pulse Wave Modulation synth. A real analog. The LFO is on a switch- you can put it on VCO or VCA which is GREAT. Sliders for ADSR, LFO speed, Glissando (which in short setting is like any other monosynth and in long setting, it steps up chromatically to another note; quite different from portamentalo), a slider for pitch- up to 2 semitones up and 2 down, feet slider for 4',8',12', 32' and WN- (32` is fatty ass bass and 4' is rich high tones, etc.. This is kinda like a transpose- I was unfamiliar with "feet" as a concept until i got this.. More sliders include the waveform, the PWM speed. VCF section has 2 sliders and a switch. Frequency cutoff and EG depth are on their own sliders and resonance is on a high/low switch (which really isn't that bad.. Slider under VCA for EG depth. Pitch wheel is funky- it's only goes up and is not really an octave.. it's an octave and what sounds like a quarter step up.. maybe this is just my particular unit. It's hard to hear if you're just playing with it- but upon aural inspection- this stuck out. As for sound, this little monkey is spectacular. I just got done recording about 2 hours of new material with it... It sounded so good after i popped some batteries in it today, I just had to get down and funky. I love putting a short release time on it and sampling the sound onto a casio Sk-1. Then i can play the sampling keyboard just as well as if it was the CS01 with those settings while I'm actually changing the settings on the CS01 to get new sounds... I dont miss a beat that way.
This is a real analog. Dont be confused by it's size. This thing knocks the pants of the Roland JP-8000 and Korg MS-2000 and all the rest of those modern keyboards that sound "analogish".. I guess they're good noise makers but um... well this is a real analog monosynth that you can fit in your backpack.... I would easily pay as much as i paid for it again if i found it. I might pay more depending. Can't wait until i have a breath controler (BC-1). I deeply thank Yamaha for making this synthesizer. It seems to have very solid construction (thought i wouldn't feed it a glass of orange juice or introduce it to the floor at 32feet per second)

Great fun. This is one of my favourite synths. You can play it anywhere and it is so immediate. A great idea from Yamaha. The build quality is very good. You can get so many worthwhile sounds from so few parameters. Mine came boxed as new from a car boot sale for �5. I'm sure thery're bargins out there to be had, so good luck. Most people think that it is some lame home mini keyboard, and it is priced accorgingly. It certainly isn't that.

I pick it up & just play all the time - something I just don't do with my other synths. The small size and built in speaker really ad to the creativity of it because you can use it absolutely anywhere.
The Yamaha build quality is fantastic. It feels substancial, despite it's size and the keyboard is excellent. The controls are precise and easy to set. You can do from a good lead to a good bass sound in under 15 seconds.
For serious sounds, I've stuck it through a proper amp and a decent guitar effects processor (EQ + chorus + delay). It beefs up well enough to compare favourably with both a Moog Prodigy and an SH101. It has enough of it's own merits to be considered on a par with these classics.
12db filter & on/off resonance are a limitation. (fixed in the MkII?!). The pitch bend is also not very useable. However, these are more than offset by the size and build quality.
I paid UKP 50 for mine. Bargain of the century. A fantastically practical instrument. It's the size that makes it so unique. So good that I'm looking for a breath controller.
