Digital oscillator gives quite a very strident sound compared to the CS5 or CS10, its elder analogue siblings. It is a little limited, but the reason for this becomes apparent in live use- it's very very easy to get the classic synth lead sounds out of it. The PWM has one slider controlling depth and rate, but the values are very well chosen. Equally the two fixed resonance values for the filter are well chosen.
There is one LFO, routable to DCO (vibrato) or VCF (wah). Not so good for effects, but the cold sounding white noise and glissando (chromatic only) instead of portamento will do things a lot of synths can't. Note- at lower settings the gliss sounds like portamento.
Looses a mark because the pitch bend is up one octave only. Changing the pot just puts it out of tune, and the internal tuning pot combined with the front panel isn't enough to get it back to concert pitch. Maybe someone could figure out resistor values to fix this? Or fit the Kenton mod, but then you loose the flexibility of batteries.
Not as good for bass as the CS10 or CS5- it just doesn't have a wide and flat frequency range, and on those increasing res gives more bass, unlike most synths.
It looks cool though, and the sound really cuts through. Remove the speaker and fit a transmitter so you can run around the stage like a loon.

the most portable analog mono synth ever made,its mini keys and lighter than sh101.tho its got no lfo(the mk2 got it)so lacks some extreme strange efx.but for synthbass,mono sweep,waves/wind noises it can surely bring u.my first synth in my high school in 82,paid $135 also got a bc1 breath controller,brand new,seldom used the bc1 'til i got the dx7 later in 85,i used bc1 quite much to blow some sax and wind presets in dx.anyway,cs01 is quite pricey today,imo don't pay over $300 w/ a bc1.also the strap and the silver soft bag.

This little guy is a great machine! I'll post a proper review later. 5 outta 5, cos when you get given something, you just can't lose!

My brother bought one years ago but couldn't figure out how to program it so he passed it on to me, to this day he's still synth challenged. At www.mp3.com/SteveRaymar is a tune called Unus Mundus that is entirely CS01. I took it down to the beach with a Tascam Porta One, DOD chorus, and Boss DDL pedals(all battery operated mind you) and layered four tracks of analog improvs in my car as the sun set. Check it out!

this thing is actually pretty badass! i have used it for bass on a track and it seriously held its own. the filter sounds really good and responsive and like the other dude said, a little effects and compression go a long way... as far as the breath controller is concerned, i just bought one at haight ashbury music in san francisco, but it should be pretty easy to get. its model # bc3. viva cs-01!!!
