a pure synth. good filters, good effects. formants are truly amazing. truly unique. only for FM lovers. programming not easy. well built like a tank. lightweight. the best FM yet.

This synth is FM heaven. Do be sure to read the two reviews previous to mine however, because they have valid points as well. if you are starting from scratch with fm synthesis as I have with the fs1r, be prepared to dedicate a serious investment of time and effort maximising this machines potential. As well, get a software editor for it, otherwise it will drive you nuts messing with the menu. Possible alternatives to this would be the Yamaha sy/tg 77, sy 99, and clavia nord modular as well as NI's fm7. Another alternitive to this synth for digital sounds could be kawais k5000s. There is a level of control here beyond subtractive synthesis, a control that can be rewarding yet takes a meticulous tenacity and lots of patience to bear fruits. Also, its presets are kind of blah if you want cutting edge dance, or ambient sounds, you must program this really and its at least 8 times more work than a nord lead....use sounddriver, or prepare to suffer.

I had owned my FS1R for 3 months before I sold it. Not that it sounded bad, but it�s one thing to browse through hundreds of exotic, hyper-modulatable textures and even more hundreds of dx7 sounds. The other thing however is to find a sound that fits into a mix and complements the other instruments i use. I found this to be an almost impossible task. I only found about 10 out of the 1500 sounds to be usable, the rest is just "listen how strange i can sound" demo stuff or simply utter crap. I�m not bashing the FS1R�s sound creation capabilities, it might even be the most versatile synthesizer out there (along with the nord modular", but who the hell knows how to create the sound he�s looking for using this arcane monstrum of synth engine that�s so badly laid out you REQUIRE sound diver or similar software to even scratch �ts surface? One other thing I didn�t like about it was the dynamics of the sound. I ended up using volume changes a lot during a track because the sounds tended to either drown the mix or be drowned by the other instruments. Now don�t come up with "you�re just a lame mixer", I own several other synths that are much easier to mix... So if you�re the kind of musician who likes to "stay in flow" browsing through synth presets looking for a good start to edit them further, you�ve got to stay away from this synth. However if you want to spend hours creating strange noises and synthetic choirs, this box is just right!

This synth is a must have if you like synths that don't use PCM samples at all. Oh yeah, and it sounds fantastic too.
