Must be the one of the best (if not THE best) synthersizers in the world. You can create INCREDIBLE sounds with this one! To bad the manual and the interface is a pain in the ass. The FM7/DX7 is white choclate compared to the FS1R

FM7 is 6 op, good graphic interface, effects, filters, software...
FS1R is a 1u rack, 8 op, formant ops, terrible interface - an editor is necessary, ok filters, ultra clean output
Both sound great, the FS1R has a clean, more distinctive sound and many more features. The manual is terrible but it's a great sounding engine. The FM7 sounds great as well, to my ears it's more "organic" sounding at times.
If you work with software synths the FM7 is a nice addition, the FS1R is excellent too. If you can get a deal the FS1R is worth it, so is the FM7.
Both read DX7 sysex. FM7 sounds a bit more accurate minus the dirty outputs of the DX's.

This is an extremely flexible and damn serious real synthesizer capable of making a tremendously wide range of diverse sounds. It's ideal for everyone who enjoy spending time to program their own unique voices, and it sounds excellently powerful. It really put freshness to a lot of my tracks. Many of the CP-voices in particular are just brilliant, but actually, this synth is capable of making outstanding sounds of any kind.
It has a complete range of programming features for each operator in a voice, and it's great that each of them independently can be programmed dynamically and scaled across the keyrange, very useful!
The manual is clear and punctual, and programming is quite easy and straightforward with the aid of the multipurpose knobs.
I haven't made any use of the FSEQ's. They seem to be a gimmick not needed for this gadget, but that's my personal opinion. They might be indispensable for others, and they are quite impressing and demonstrate a lot of the potential.
The routing for the assignable sound controllers and external controllers is very generous, but it's a little irritating how tweeking the FORMANT- and FM-controllers changes the sound in audible steps, it limits their usage.
The effects sound great, though it's cumbersome that they are linked to the performances and not to the voices, but these few cons are insignificant in comparison to the wealth of exciting features.
A GREAT PRODUCT!

Ok , I've owned this thing for 2 years and I really like it ! you can get some truly unique sounds but you better be willing to work here; some of the presets are great some are crap the thing I just don't get is with this kind of synthesis power at your fingertips how come the guys at yamaha managed to program lots of cheesy presets ? lazy programming ? hmm... thank god you can program your own stuff, but I have to use the Mac editor, oh yes the interface is as cryptic as it gets Yamaha should change their "creating kando together" slogan to "we will continue to redefine horrible user interfaces for years to come" well maybe the words "ergonomic","intuitive" or "speedy editing" are missing in their lexicon, but the results you can get from this thing are remarkable, people always ask me "hey where did you get that sound ?" you can program lots of different types of sounds, pads , leads and lots of strange and new evolving textures plus you can get some really ballsy sounds as well, but you have to love sound design and programming if you don't this synth is not for you. there are some limitations here: polyphony, multitimbrality and those LFO's you can't sync to midi clock ,and there's also a midi bug when performing sysex dumps, but I will tell you this : If you are into electronic music you will smile when you hear the FS1R in your mix
