An astonishing synth. Appears to be 24bit/96KHz internal, using 8 voiced operators and 8 unvoiced, with formant shaping filters. Running mine under Sounddiver 3 and using the freeware FseqEdit to program formants. The secret of its sound lies in the fact that the unvoiced ops provide the noise elements the x7 generation used operator feedback to create, allowing a very rich tonality from all 8 operators. The only digital synth with anything like the power, richness and sheer acoustic presence of a true analogue but makes unashamedly digital sounds of almost shocking clarity, expression and stereo image.
Too much DX7 cheeseburger in the preset voices. The intermediate section between top level knob twiddling and deep down operator programming is versatile enough to take the inbuilts and generate a huge palette of totally unique sounds. You need to understand FM fully to go any deeper, and use software to control the operator settings.
This is a synth for synth programmers, preset babies will hate it. No other synth offers the potential to create such new, unique sounds, where the streets have no names. Tomorrows legend, today.

Four ocilators, brilliant outputs, and fantastic effects with FM engine. Overall sounds are bright and digitally clean, I made some utra FAT sounds with this. As a propessional music producer, I reccomend FS1r. There are bunch of PCM sound modules in market, I guess most of you guys already have at least one of Emu PT2000, Motif, Triton, Tr-rack, trinity, JV2080, Xv3080, 5080, 5050, 2020, X5d/r, etc. If you have more than two of these, begin to look at VA synths (incl. Fs1r) or Real analogue synths. If you spend more than 6 months with these kind of synths, you may find that those synths are MUCH MORE Valuable than any PCM modules. Software sampler like EXS or Giga sampler are OK, but if you need unique strong sounds from sampler buy one if you can afford it. Whatever your taste is, you'll need VA synth or FM synth in near future if you want to be a professional musican, soundeditor, producer, sound engineering, and DJ. Don't think like amature musicain or hobbist musician, either. Finally I strongly reccomend YAMAHA FS1R. Really creative rack module.

the formant sequences are editable but you need software to do it , sounddiver i think does it .

The manual isn't much clear, but I discovered two useful things after 2 months of use: 1- this module accepts vector control (I connected my old SY22 on it), which can add more expression to music; 2- the offset function is the key when you need to simulate sounds of other Yamaha modules, like TX81Z - set it around to 16, and it's possible to copy the LFO curves. I like the formants, but the sequenceformants aren't editable by user - and it would be preferrable. But no doubt this is a great module, and my favorite.

Very, very good :
1 : good resource for sounds if you want to be original
2 : fm is not THAT complicated
3 : sure, the interface is very basic and the unit nearly has no fancy knobs to tweak, but its very logical
4: synth-heaven with sounddiver
5 : price-quality : very good
6 : effects are reasonable (use external effects!)
7 : has the 'warm' filters that the an1x also has
CONCLUSION : this will be history in a couple of years
