A strange mix of new and old technology-- the formant stuff is new and the fm stuff is old. Then add filters and dsp fx. None of the elements are outstanding in themselves. The filters are typical nineties mediocrity-- the fx are passable but not great-- the formants take alot of tweeking to get rid of the their inherent cheeziness. What saves the whole package is the way the fm synthesis interacts with all of this stuff: you'd need an entire rack of stuff to do this to a dx100. For most people, saving up for a virus or roland groove-thing would probably be more satisfying. But if you've fallen in love with programming the dx-100, tx-81z or a dx-7, this is next, natural, freaky step. I took my dx100 and all of the gear i was processing it, and traded it in. There's a comprehensive editor on the net for Mac, and two PC editor's are in the works on the user website. Synthesis can be simple or complicated. I'll take it either way.

As long as Yamaha get the FS1r PC editor to us in the near future this rack synth may prove to be on of the best mid-price mods available. Editing sounds through the front panel is annoying unless you have little fingers, somewhat tricky

you may think what ya want, i find it a cool thing and definatly it's price worthy. It is a nice and affordable addition for the homestudio. Completly different then the other stuff i have, so....GET THAT MACHINE ! By the way: if somebody have the .INS file for cakewalk or an editor for the PC, it would be very welcome.

Uh, I'm not sure you understand the power of the FS1R, first of all, those spoken voices aren't "Cheap... ...Synthesized samples" they are made using the Yamaha's Format Shaping Synthesis in which you can make vowels and words using it. Quite complex. Also as far as FM programming goes, the FS1R blows every other FM module away. DX27 and DX100 were 4 op FM. Tx81z was 6 op. With the FS1R its normally 8 op(which is very good) but also Yamaha has proveded two sets of formant Operators, eight 'voiced' and eight 'unvoiced', that work side by side in pairs --so you could say that the FS1R is actually a 16 Operator Synth!!! Among this old FM synths had no filters, which left them cold and thin, and once again the FS1R fixes on this by a very good one, among having multiple FX's. Also, I think you should try listening to more of the presets, as considering there are 1400 voices and nearly 500 performances, it would take you a very long time to listen to them all. Some choice cuts are Performance A 074 (Solstice) really cool wave-sequencing effect, sounds like it would be impossible for FM. Performance A 006 is also good, and Performance A 009, 030, 066, 121, Performance B 022, 097, Performance C 035, 054 are all very good. Among this this synth is extrememly cheap for such a wide variety of sounds it can come up with. Only crappy thing about it is that using the filter cuts polyphony by half, and the operating system is quite confusing and the manual is crap. But hey, for 699 pounds its a wicked deal, and its got DX7 compatability too!
