I have had the Rm1X for some years now, and to be honest i under use it. That is to say its feature set and configurability are deep. Anyone looking for a single Hardware box sequencer with sounds/effects/mixing may find the Rm1X a good solution. Someone looking for a good introduction to synthesis and studio technique would do well to consider the Rm1x. I'm learning plenty about MIDI from this box. Some of the sounds can be flat, but these can be twisted and layered, with resonant filters/effects/modulation into something fierce or beautifully. The filters at high resonance can have a digital ring like a faint distortion/hiss. Some stepping? The Drum sounds are good. The step sequencer occurs on the LCD, and is less intuitive than a standard XoXo step Sequencer. However the groove sequencer, arpeggiator and midi delay make this a mean pattern generator.
The controls are configurable, banked, and fun to use. The 8 controle pots to the right of the LCD are smooth. The 4 rotary encoders below the LCD work with the parameters displayed(generally above them). The LCD can be used to show a "cartoon" mixer. Levels pan etc can be easily monitored this way. Its fun to watch the automation on playback and listen for what works and what doesn't.
Recently I plugged the Rm1x into two monosynths. The NovationBassStation and a PaiaFatMan, accompanied by the drums and pads of the Rm1x. I was only usin 2-3 Midi channels in conjunction with the arpegiator and midi delay to generate some AcidHouse type sounds. The arpeggiator is transposable. This simple midi set is about as complex as I've gotten, but it seems the Rm1x plays well with others. Outboard sounds seem a bit more present and live when a/b with the Rm1x synths in my experience.
@ The current used price the Rm1x is a second hand bargain. I am getting into computer sequencing, but will keep my blue box. The thing works.

HOLY CRAP! This thing is AWESOME! Just dinking around with it for about 2 hours without reading the manual, I was able to do just about everything I'd expect to be able to do...pretty intuitive interface. The keyboard input is a little funky, but it works, and you might as well hook up your external keys for doing complex leads w/ bends, etc. I still need to buy MIDI cables to do that. Paid 375 for it on ebay, worth every penny. Can't wait to see what I can do given a weekend and having read the manual!

Quite simply the greatest hardware sequencer ever made. 16 tracks with all the editting features you could dream of this gem gives (& surpasses) most computer based sequencers. Aside from that the effects are also first class. And while there are alot of sub-standard sounds onboard. Its the good ones that matter. OB BASS is incredible when tweaked and chorus and octaver 1 are used. And some of the pads are wonderful. And the drumkits are fantastic. All in all for your money this machine is quite simply unbeatable I love it...

this thing is really nice, its a killer portable sequencer workstation with a ton of nice sounds easy as shit to sequence. i got this becasue i have a yamaha ex7 which is big and heavy and wanted to have a workstation i could sit on my lap while i watch tv when im stoned. this thing fit the bill .alot of people on here have dissed the sounds, but i think for the price of these second hand you cant go wrong. i personally think the sounds are great. your not goign to love every sound on every peice of gear you have, but this has all the bread and butter sounds you need if you want to write techno, hip hop, trance, etc...you name it. plus this kills the roland mc 303 or 505. these can be had in the $200-$250 range on ebay, if you want a portable peice of gear with great drum sounds and great synth sounds and trippy weird sounds get this . you wont be dissapointed

I've wanted a RM1x for years, but just never got around to it since I was busy filling up the rest of my studio. I just got one uber-cheap today. I had already read all the reviews here and elsewhere so I wasn't expecting much. And yeah, when I turned it on and started playing the first pattern I wasn't terribly impressed.
But! Then I got into it and started with the sequencer, the track mutes and recording modes. I was amazed! Hooked it up to my AMT-8 to drive other synths and it got even better! This baby is worth it just for the sequencer!!
The sounds are not too bad, despite what everyone says! They just need some EQ lovin' to fatten them up and round them out. Don't be put off by the whole "groovebox" thing, this thing can be a weapon in the right hands!
