well, now that i use a lot the "overbub" method of recording to affect pitch, cutoff, resonance and fx exacly as the 'motion sequence' in the electribe series (even if it's not in real time during performing), this machine IZ really powerfull.
and it's so powerful to have the possibility to make pattern with a part in 7/8 and 16 length, another in 3/4 and 3 lenght, and another in 4/4 and 4 lenght, and so on, all in 1 pattern, all in syncro.
probably i'll save and buy the RS7000 for the sampler, so i'll work with MY sounds even if in the edit mode or jobs or overdub of the RM1-X you can get things that people can't never imagine that they come from the box.

this is my best friend among digital & handy little gadgets, i use it all the time, especially when i'm away from my synth setup; it actually sounds just as good as a room full of synths if you program it carefully; listen to my track "fishes" on mp3.com which was made almost entirely with this box (http://www.mp3.com/emanuel). right now, i'm working on 1) a synth-pop song and 2) a two-step-artful-dodger-soul kind of thing. it's amazing and sincerely cool.
actually, i'm thinking of upgrading to the new sampler mommadaddy RS2000 or what's it gonna be, since i also have a jv 1080 and a yamaha a 3000 which i seldom find time to work with; everything in one box CAN be really great, after all. well done, yamaha.

I've heard a good combination of gripes about the RM1x. The presets suck, the effects are limited, it has no synthesis, it doesn't tuck me in and read me bed time stories at night. First off, it costs under $600 new. Second, it's not advertised as an all in one box. It's a Sequence Remixer. It's two biggest strong points are it's sequence editing and use in a live situation. Just those two uses are so strong that it beats a lot of higher priced equipment hands down. Don't expect this box to do all the things that a $1500+ workstation does.
Okay, let's break this thing down. Sequencer is extremely powerful. I hate software sequencers. Just too much editing envolved. This gives me time to concentrate on song writing rather than editing crap on a PC screen with a mouse. Plus, using a PC Sequencer flat out sucks in a live situation. RM1x has a nice backlit LED for editing and keeping your head from hurting squinting at small screens on other comparable sequencers.
The sounds by themselves are mediocre. You can treak them a little but you can't really edit them as much as you would on a synth. The drums are pretty decent but again, only treakable to a certain point. The sounds are definitly good enough to sit on you couch and lay down some tracks, then take it to your PC or outbourd gear for better sounds. Truthfully, the MC505 sounds are not as great as people make them out to be. A PC with a good sound card has a lot more potential and the cost of the MC505 is not worth it. One thing you can do to get a little better sounds is to layer different sounds on different tracks, add effects, and tweak the filters.
The presets are good example of what the RM1x can do on it's own, but if you spend money on box for it's presets, then you might as well go buy a CD or download some mp3s. The real beauty of this box is it's sequence editing. If you overlook that, then your really missing the point.
Effects is my one bitch about this unit. Three global, Chorus/flanger, Reverb, and Variation. It would have been more useful to have all three variation so I can combine Destortion, delay, and reverb, but hey, just means more thought envoled in finding a solution. The effect's quality is good though but my only solution is to use the effects available on my outbourd synths or my PC. A rack effects just won't cut it since I don't use distortion or delay on all 16 tracks at the same time. Again, you can get much better sounds from a PC, module, etc...
Overall, this box is great. The price is well within my budget compared to the MC505 and it impressed me alot more. The MC505 is a good box, but I think it's overpriced and overrated.

This is the skinny,skinny lowdown.
The RM1X is a powerful sequencer, with features that are intuitive to use.

+++... in-depth controls over voices(over 700?! of them) and effects... quality drum sounds... can remotely control other synths midi parameters via it's own control surface(possibly saving you from needing a phat-boy, or control freak)... main buttons\knobs convieniently located... mute memory stores 5 channel muting setups to be recalled using 1 button each...
---... Only 2 outputs for the 16 tracks available... meager arpegiator... my unit forgets the voice you are working with and resets to some other voice number(so iritating to my production buddy, he refuses to use it until repaired(0n a related note, although yamaha has sent me free-of-charge the new operating system which remedies forgetful RM1X's, it took 3 unanswered e-mails, a 20 minute call to yamaha corparate, & a 3hour wait for a call-back just to take care of it))
*** if you like techno as in techno techno you should know that Justin Berkovi of Predicaments UK uses one, and Paul Birken from Communique and now Tonewrecker records also!!
