I had a 505 and I agree with most everyone else. The RM1X is a very VERy phat machine for the money and its control over each sound it untouchable compared to other groove boxes, but the 505 has grittier sounds. Out of the box the 505 would be a better choice for someone who just wants to do a little remixing. As far as depth goes with your musical preference, the RM1X has the lead with control. I especailly love the "step" recording function. Full control over building your own arpeggios. VERY NICE MACHINE!!! Its yamaha (enough said), and its price cant be touched. =)

Okay, I have both the Roland 505 and the RMx1.
The RMx1 is a GREAT sequencer, very nice, but the Roland 505 has much better sounds and the effects that you can place on them make your sound bank limitless.
So, I am trying to use them together and I am running into a bit of frustration. I almost have it, but I think I am missing a couple of steps that would make it a lot easier.
There have been a few people who have posted that they are doing this, but have left no e-mail address for contact.
Any thoughts or comments would be helpful!

The RM1x has given me the inspiration to improve my live dance act, improving mixing, sound, sequencing the whole lot. 10/10 to Yamaha for producing an affordable product with unlimited potential!

The RM1x is a great machine. Why else would it have gone UP in price over the past year or so instead of down?
Why else would Future Music still rate it as the best entry-level synth?
If you already own a 505, and hate the Rm1x, fair enough - you don't want to have to learn a different machine. But these aren't the same as PCs - it's an instrument, and as long as you can still plug it in, it's valid.
I still use my Jen analogue every now and then.
So then, spoogeprincess, think twice before you next dis my machine!

I originally traded the MC-303 Groovebox for the RM1x (I needed more than 4 tracks of strings, pads, etc.) for my live show.
The RM1x more than met my specifications; amazing hardware sequencer (I am originally a computer-based sequencer person- Cubase) but it makes it really easy to knock out some phat sequences, and combining that with a DR-770 or a couple really good drum machines, you can't beat it.
my *only* complaint: stereo pair outs. For the tools like these, you need 8 outs- anything over 4 tracks playing at once and it gets muddy real quick. Sound editing is a breeze and if you had a sampler, even better (sample the basslines out of it and filter them all out!)
I would recommend it to anyone looking to buy a hardware sequencer for a live gig under $600; put the MPCs down kids, this is where it's at :D
