I own a bedroom studio minus a computer (for sequencing) with about 6 pieces of gear. I own the MC-303 and have a feel for a poorly designed sequencer. After getting this kick-ass RM1X (to complement my AN1X) just three days ago it has become the centerpiece of my rig. It took me a good day to figure out the damn thing but after A LOT of trial and error have almost mastered the beast (I think?!). It is such a ball to use with many more features on board than the "sissy-la-la groovebox", way better sounds and an arrsanal of effects to wet some "nanny'!!! I WOULD HAVE GLADLY PAID OVER ONE-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR IT AND LEFT THE BUILDING SMILING~

I've had this RM1x for about 3 months now and it has become the centerpiece of my studio. I use an imac DV, Cubase 4x, Roland XP-30, VSamp, Rebirth, Recycle, and many virtual synths. The RM1x makes all these other pieces way more useful because they can now all be controlled realtime or in combination with the RM1x. I even like the sounds that come with the internal Tone Generator. But if you get tired of those then play the RM1x through your other midi driven TG's.
I've used Cubase for about a year now and it's great but it takes longer to experiment with to get good results. The RM1x is instantanious and allows you to quickly experiment. It is by far the quickest way to get killer midi tracks down in Cubase. Best money I ever spent.

The RM1X is a fun, mostly intuitive and extremely useful creative tool. The amount of control that you have over the performance of a sequence is amazing. It takes a few hours to find out where everything is, but after that this thing is very easy to use. I was building patterns and tracks and editing sounds and midi events the second day. The sequencer kicks the living shit out of the groovebox series. The presets are very plain, but they give you more than enough material and effects options to create your own dynamic synth sounds. Those familiar with synthesizers will have fun tweaking it and creating sounds. There aren't any good piano sounds, but this machine wasn't designed to reinvent the piano. It's a versatile sequencer with a shitload of options, plenty of sounds to edit down, the pattern presets are useful for stealing patches and different tracks for remixing. If you expect the presets to be awesome so you can make professional sounding tracks right out of the box, than you forgot that the process of creating music was supposed to be a creative process. Hitting buttons isn't musical, but performing on the RM1X can definately be a rewarding musical experience.

i must say, this box inspires a lot of strong feelings in a lot of people. i chose it because it's small, relatively cheap, and fun to use. yeah, i could have gotten a software sequencer, i looked at a bunch of them. yeah, i would've saved some money if i had, and i could've done lots of cool stuff i can't do on the RM1X. but i use a computer 8 hours a day at work. it sure is nice to come home, switch on a unit that was meant to do one thing and do it well, get stuff done and not listen to some whiny computer talk about how it can't access the midi port because it's "busy" or some other crap error message... don't like the sounds? hook it up to a synth or sampler. the RM1X rocks on, complainers need to step off.

Hands down the best sequencer under $1000. Way, way better than Cubase if "live" sequencing/jamming is your thing.
I have to agree with the previous post - the sounds DO fit in well with other synths - hell, playing the sounds along with a "real" CD even sounds good...
Add a balls-out compressor and it's even better.
The filter is amazing, all filters should work this well. Too bad you only get a Lo-Pass. *You want some FAT bass, change the Variation Effect "AMP SIM" to a TUBE AMP, also adds warm & crunch to those drums!
OK, they aren't the best drums, but I use them to add to my sampled breaks...they sound different (thats good!), but they definately add to the mix in a good way. Kinda like adding some spice :)
Sequencing external gear is a dream - easy as pie to set up, you can remap ALL realtime controllers to the CC#'s of your choice, and it is an absolute JOY to control everything with one piece of gear. Forget what people say about the knobs - I'd rather have small knobs than NONE! All I have to say is you don'y know what your missing...this piece of gear is a godsend for my work. I can JAM LIVE on this, as opposed to pushing around a freakin mouse.
I have come to the conclusion that most people who dis this box are rich, high-brow assholes (AKA MPC3000 users) that need to talk shit about their genitalia instead of making tracks.
Wake up assholes...I'll be laughing at your ass all the way to the $$$BANK$$$
