I don't give a shit about the cheap knobs, or the funky green/blue color like some of you do. What I LOVE about it is that it KICKS ASS!!! An excellent sequencer w/on-board tones that will kick the shit out of any lame groovebox series. The inner sounds mix well with my synths, and the percussion is pretty good too. The inner FX are awesome too. I've always hated presets on ANY unit, but the ones included in this beast SCREAM HALLELUIA!!!!!! I give it a 1001 out of 1000.

This machine has made my life a LOT easier!! Soooo much cooler than my computer sequencer set-up. Now I feel like Im playing an actual insrument again instead of pushin the mouse. This is the best sequencer I could find in my price-range. I will NEVER go back to pushin the mouse. What a nightmare!! Yamaha scored big-time with me on this baby!! Definately 5 out of 5!!!

Face it, the tone generator on the RM is pretty lame. If you layer too many effects and midi events, polyphony gets eaten... and to get half-way good drum sounds you need to jack up the (at least tweakable) 3-band EQ effect which uses up your variation slot. HOWEVER, if you drive external synths with it, you will have no problem, and on the contrary, you will have one of the best performance sequencers on the market. Granted, 64 voices is fairly slim, but a skilled composer should be able to make this limitation unnoticeable. The method of pattern switching and muting, along with the clock shifts, beat stretches, midi delays and configurable knobs is an infinitely inspirational setup. Im talking non-stop jam sessions through 10 songs or more without stopping. Freaky ass real-time tweakitude at your fingertips. The RM allows for strangely evolving melodies and song structures, limited only by your imagination (and possibly mathematic abilities). If you are looking for a sequencer, then buy it. If you want an all-in-one, then good luck to you. BTW, the 505 sucks. I mean, whats up with that LCD? Its the icing on the cake of problems with that hopeful.

The RM1X vs. the MC-505 question continues. The best solution for me was to get both of them. And I am glad I did. This way, I have the best of both worlds. I cannot see parting with either one of them. They are different animals yet work very nicely together. Its impossible for me to say which one I like better. They both rock!! And wow do they love to play together. Lots of power when you hitch em up as a team. Im very pleased.
