i love the ability of the rm1x to swap smf with my software sequencer. so programing in your bed is fun, but i like to visualize my songs and nothing is better than a computer. with the rm1x you can swap songs son you can get the best of both worlds.

after 30 pages and more of comments about RM1x here's my own. I got a RM1x since october 99 and the first thing i want to say is that I'm happy with it. I do not rely anymore on s/w sequencer and that's the main reason i bought it. I did not purchase it beacuse of the groovy trend. what i like about it is the capability it has to throw new perspectives and new lights to your tunes. this has a lot to do with its instant midi processing tools. you won't beleive how inspiring is the beat-strech function for example. MIDI delay is so powerfull and clock shift helps alot in realising complex arrangments. you can do the same on s/w sequencers too but not just by turning one knob. moreover you will miss the pleasure to make music laying on your bed...;) MIDI implementation is wonderfull, really. you can control everything. and that's also why I rejected Roland's groove-boxes (not to mention the limited number of tracks) . it will become the centre of your set-up. when you learn how to work with it you will appreciate the work spent by yamaha engineers. they really did their best to make this thing handy and usefull. how about the complained sounds? to let you understand what I think about the sounds I will say that you won't come into "in-your face sounds" but this is obvious. Anyway the results are convincing (just listen to the beautifull programmed patterns) and I'm happy with them. my only complain is that they could have thought about future upgrades, such as those plug-in boards that you can fit in some yamaha expanders. it would have been great to have the synth engine of the AN1x into the RM1x. you will never be able to play a software sequencer, I play a RM1x.

I've had mine for about half a year now, and I'd have to say that I love it. The drum kits and FX are great, but I really think the bass sounds are really lacking on the low end. I only wish that you could have at least two set of outputs, so that you could route some voices to outboard effects, rather than only using the onboard ones. I suppose it shouldn't be too much of a problem if you're working with computer production, since you can just record tracks in audio then add effects and mix down. All in all, an excellent value for the money, all the drum machine I would ever want.

The RM1x is my good for the money ($699 most places) because it's a sequencer + TG. But I was looking for something that reflects the old classic Alesis MMT8 that so many House and Trance artists use today. Then I found it, the world's best kept secret in sequencing, the KAWAI Q80EXe. For $369 it is the MMT8 on steroids!!
The RM1x is still decent though. I would choose it over an Akai any day. I guess I like the KAWAI because it's so damn easy to do what you need to do..no fooling around or jumping through menus and sub-sub-sub menus!!
