@ JULZ the SU is great for drum programming. The internal sequencer is very tight, there's a nifty roll function and you can add some swing with the timing parameter. Al sounds can be treated with effects and filters, reversed, scratched, etc. It's also possible to program a loop with individual hits and then resample that to a loop track and build rythms like that. Lots of possibilities

Had this sampler for 2 months and I must say it I love it. The layout is tottally intuitive and the real-time tweaking on it is sweet. Learning this machine shouldnt be hard do to the well written manual. (the tutorial part at the beggining lets you learn the basics of the su700 pretty easily.) My only gripes would be, no "on the fly" sampling, and not being able to choose what type of pad for each track. only 8 loop tracks may not be enough for some people depending on what your doing. And than theres the obvious lack of scsi. It can not be stressed enough that the is a must if you want to save youre work, and it will cost anoth 250 bbucks. Saving 10 floppies takes so long its almost a joke, considering this is supposed to be a realtime performance machine. Overall this is one of the best phrase samplers you can bu. period.

How is the SU700 at drum programming (original beats from single hits)?

The SU 700 is an awesome machine that's going to be a sought-after classic in a few years. I love mine and I'd like to get my hands on a second one for live gigging purposes. I just cannot find them anymore since everyone hangs on to this thing! And quite rightfully so.

It's great in a studio setup and has a lot of useful build-in effects and filters. But it's also great as a stand-alone live machine.

One hobby of mine is to make basic minimal techno and breakbeat tunes using just a few samples so a song fits on one floppy disk. With the effects, roll function and filters you can really make buil-ups and breakdowns in tracks only using like 3 sampled loops. With 2 SU 700's and a bunch of tracks on floppies it's possible to make complete 'DJ' sets that can span several hours, changing disks like playing records on normal decks. During the set you can tweak things a little more using the filters and roll function. I absolutely love it!

Great, I use it as a studio sampler and it works fine. So disregard what David below said on that point, except the fact that it makes a great live machine. It does. PS: slow SCSI is not a bug, but an inherent part of the machine (tho quite an annoying one at times!)
