Jeremiah M. Stanfill a hobbyist user from USA writes:
I've owned one of these for six months now, and I think it's a wonderful synth to play and program. I personally wouldn't use it as a main MIDI sound source for sequencing, but it's very nice for something to play...be it that one has a compassion for FM synthesis to manage the AFM parameters sufficiently and use the AWM veeeeeeeeeeee...eery sparingly. I would not recommend this synth to anyone looking just for 'something to play'. The FX are great for a 1989/1990 sound but they need tweeking. The sequencer is managable only that the drawback is the polyphony; I'd recommend an external software sequencing program. In closing, this is a programmer's synth. Trillions of options for new sounds as well as familiar ones. Mail me your data card (pay shipping) and I'll load it with sounds to include: a realistic wurlie patch, as well as all sorts of AFM filmscape hi-fi.

Steve Jones a professional user from California U,S,A writes:
The Yamaha SY77 is one of the greatest synths of ALLTIME, and certainly my favourite. I have a Korg Triton which is an excellent synth/workstation and sounds sweet, a little TOO sweet. This is where the SY77 rules. It has a presence, an edge that most modern synths lack. It can produce all those wonderful airy new age type pads and also the heaviest bass sounds you will ever hear. For soundtrack composition, jazz and pop & rock and ambient dance it is awesome. People say you can't get decent acoustic piano sounds from the SY77. This is true if you want an absolute simulation. But what the SY77 will do is produce UNIQUE piano type sounds which have extraordinary beauty and presence in a mix and really lift a composition. The organs, brass and woodwind sounds are superb too. People who say FM has no weight and warmth when compared to analogue have never heard a Yamaha SY77. It has incredible weight warmth and expressive quality. The sequencer isn't great but will work fine for laying down ideas which can be completed on a more elaborate set-up later. The only let down sonically on the SY77 is the drums, they are adequate but Yamaha more than made up for this with their superb RY30 drum/machine which added to the SY77 gives a truly AWESOME combination.

At current second-hand prices the SY77 isn't simply a bargain, its a must have. If you want a famous example of what the SY77 can do, check out Richard Marx "Hazard". Many of the sounds on that song are from the SY77.

JoelF a part-time user from usa writes:
I picked up my SY77 used over 10 years ago and it has been the mainstay in my rig ever since. I love the fat sounds it produces and it covers all those interesting 80's patches without even breathing hard! Durable as all get out, I gig out almost every weekend and it has never failed me or left me hanging. I currently replacing my older (yes even older than the sy) synth, but the SY77 will continue to be the center of my sound. If you don't have one.... get one!
