Jeroen a part-time user from The Netherlands writes:
Great synth!! The electric piano (rhodes-like) piano sounds cannot be beaten! Strings, pads and strange noises are also great! Organs and drums are crap, if they are compared to other (newer) synthesizers. Great keyboard, nicely built case. I bought one for only 900 dutch guilders ($450).

Tom a hobbyist user from Seattle writes:
My first, and until recently only, non-analog. I got it because I was fascinated by the math behind FM, but forget the math, this thing makes music. The keyboard is nice (although I'm not a real keybaord player so don't believe me), the three control wheels have a very nice feel (although I miss ribbon controllers), the sounds are great (well, until you start hitting the high notes where the digital aliasing can make things unpleasant if you're not careful), and the variety of sounds is overwhelming. I even like the filters, and I own four analogs for comparison. You can set up a patch so you can control the filter cutoff in realtime with a mod wheel just like an analog, or you can play it in edit mode and tweak voice parameters on the fly. If it had oscillator sync I might be able to throw away one or two analogs. Not that I would though.

The voice architecture is complex, the voices can be a bit tedious to edit, and I've only made maybe five voices (out of hundreds) that I'm really proud of, but that's no problem because there is a vast number of voices to download, both SY77-specific voices that take advantage of all the features and converted DX7 voices. The sounds people get out of this thing amaze me; I feel I know it pretty well but I'm always hearing something that makes me wonder how they did it and learning new tricks.

Don't buy it for the sequencer (get a computer), drums (get a drum machine), or the LCD backlighting. Do buy it for anything else, including industrial, dance, jazz, new age, porno soundtracks, etc.

Jae-Young CHOI a hobbyist user from korea(seoul) writes:
I got run into it in 1991, as a my first synth it always has showed its great sonic power seamlessly. I love the feeling and expressiveness of this keyboard and flexibilities. I had many experience on synth stuffs(KORG, KURZ). Every time i got through other brand I find the more I crazy about this machine. The stong point may lie in organ, electric piano, brass-side. Downwards are from drum(I don't think it's important) accoustic piano. You could find some fantastic voices from the internet like analogue style, killer electric pianos, punching bass and SF stuffs. If I got stolen definitely buy ot again. Alert that the true power of this monster comes from FM not AWM. Its nonlinear response you will love 'n eat them up ultimately.

FRONTRUNNER a professional user from Brazil writes:
I have a sy77 since 1996 and i love it ! I have around 20,000 sounds in disk and each disk i discover a new synth on my sy77. It's capable of produce several kinds of sounds, including those analogs fat basses and pads. I make industrial music and the sy77 is a fantastic machine for that electro-style.

James Shaw a professional user from USA writes:
I have owned an SY77 since December 1990. It is in my opinion an excellent, unique keyboard in many respects. Combining AWM & AFM synthesis, I have being able to create and play an outstanding assortment of sounds. The electric pianos sounds (such as Full Tines, Fender Rhodes, etc.) are unsurpassed by any other keyboard in my opinion. Horns, strings and organ sounds are very realistic and smooth to play. The builty in sequencer is very easy to use. Downside of the keyboard (in my opinion) are the acoustic pianos & drum sounds (very weak). Before purchasing this board, I owned a DX7IIFD. This board gave me back my FM synthesis engine (DX7*.*)in addition to a Waveform systhesis engine. I would recommend this keyboard to any serious musician.
