This synth is powerful, I bought it at a music store where it was right next to a roland fantom. Guess what? this yamaha beat the snot out of the roland board. It combines the best features of a DX-7 with great waveform synthesis. Nothing else except a few other yamahas have this type of sound generation. It goes very well with my ESQ-1 in a mix. Anyway I am a huge fan of any type of waveform synthesis, and this seems to be about the best thing out there in this vein. Although I have never been near a NED synclavier, CMI fairlight, or PPG wave to compare the sounds with the SY.

Hi, I bought my Sy 77 around 15 years ago for $4000 cdn. It was a foolish purchase for me at the time because I didn't know the first thing about playing music. But I planned on learning to play the piano and then making my own electronic music. I never learned to play piano and tried to sell this thing a couple of times. But no one wanted it for the price I was asking. Anyways it has been collecting dust all these years. I decided to take piano lessons once again. I figure now that I am older and more patient perhaps this time I'll succeed and I can get down to creating music on this thing. My question is, I never bought a data card and I was wondering if I hook this thing up to my computer if I can somehow save newly created sounds there or do I need a data card? If not does someone have a data card they are willing to sell me? I also want to thank you guys for your positive reviews of the Sy 77. I didn't realize I had one of the best synths ever made. I thought for sure the stuff out there now would make this keyboard obsolete.

Had one of these synths about a week and can honestly say i love it,it can produce some fantastic sounds ranging from sub sonics that move speakers to light and airy pads and strings. The internal waveforms are a bit basic but can still be used to good effect especially when you filter them and drown them in effects, but, the fun really starts when you start to use the waveforms as a operator in the fantastic fm synth that lurks beneath the hood of this synth.6 op FM is not too complicated to get your head around simply think of a carrier as a vco or dco and the modulator is like an lfo that is applied to the vco or dco and the algorithm is simply how the fm operators are arranged ie is one of the six operators a modulator or a carrier or in some cases an operator can be both allowing one of the outputs from the carrier or modulator to feedback into one of the inputs of another modulator or carrier. The manual is great and whilst it does not give an in depth intro to fm it is enough to get going.I love analog synths and I am really impressed by this synth because it can make great analog sounds.I always dissed the dx7 but i guess i was wrong because i really like FM now since getting this synth and can see what people where banging on about. Get one of these synths and get an editor for it as this will make it easier to edit although editing from the front panel is not that much of a pain as the layout is really well thought out. This is destined to become a classic it baffles me why these are so cheap,it is definitely a programmers synth and you will be rewarded with cool sounds from this if you take the time.I would advise preset merchants to stay away from it but proper synth heads will love this.defo a 5 out of 5.

I got one of these on ebay 3 weeks ago for $300 and I am very impressed.

There is alot of good sounds in the SY77 and I love the strings.

I read that the floppy disk is easily broken, but fingers crossed mine works fine. The seller recently had it serviced new battery and floppy disk checked out.

I would suggest anyone interested in buying a workstation/synth check out the SY77 you may be surprised how good they're.
