I hate to say it, but the CZ101 was once part of my rig. For the price it was a great piece of equipment. The preset sounds were average, but at the same time quite flavorful for what was available on other synths at the time. It was the first PCM synth on the market and easy to edit the waveforms. Out of all the equipment I have owned, I'd consider adding it back into my midi rig if I could keep it hidden under a box or cloth or something so no one would see it. That little keyboard is embarrasing. I sold my CZ-101 in 1990 as part of a rig package. You could not beat the price for the sound. I remember reading that several major league professionals were using the CZ-101 in the studio. I spent a lot of time programming it. I still had sheets of sound pathes I created lying around my house for about five years in case I bought another one. Overall it's sounds were a simi-fat synthy sound. It worked well in the early 80's and sounded better than the DX-7 in my opinion.

I may be one of the biggest cz-101 fans there is! I wouldn't give this little dude up for the world! Phase Distortion has such a unique sound for a digital synth, one that is IMHO cooler than the dx7(et.al). I used to use it in a punk/new wave band. I would power it on batteries and use the guitar strap for mobility and that retro-80's look. Before we played, people would laugh at the tiny keys and the word CASIO, but the synth spoke for itself, and we'd get compliments for the cool keyboard sound. I've had mine for 3 years now, and still play it all the time. great near-analogue sounds, creepy strings, resonant sweeping pads, BASS, cool leads, distorted angry industrial noises, even sound effects and Nintendo-drums!! It is SO easy to program once you take the time to learn. The only drawbacks are the limited polyphony, the crappy buttons, and the lack of a data-entry slider. Despite all of that, I still love it! in fact, my next synth purchase is going to be the more feature-laden, top-of-the-line cz-1!

This thing is retarted AND I LOVE IT. It is a little hard to program at first especaly with no instruction manual but Im starting to get the hang of it (its my first synth without knobs) this little bastard can be super cool if you put some time in it, I love evreyones shock when they realise these badass sounds are coming out of a "toy". This thing kills me! Not to mention I got it for eighty dollars! But most judge it on it on its looks and thats fine by me there loss my gain I love the way it looks but I love its sound ability even more!

very, very underrated synth. The lack of velocity & other control is almost compensated for by vast expressiveness and flexibility of 8-stage envelopes on 2 oscillators (DCO), 2 virtual "filters" (DCW), and 2 amps (DCA), plus noise and ring modulation. Very nice Fender-style bass is possible, along with some amazing sound effects and percussion. I did a talking drum on mine that's damn close to the real thing.
Not especially big a la Roland or Moog, and weak on strings and horns, but nothing quite like it --gives its own organic kind of bottom to a track.
Time and information help a lot with the CZ -- Andrew Schlesinger's AN INSIDER'S GUIDE TO CASIO CZ SYNTHESIZERS is still available from Amazon. If you can find it, Mark Bennett Gartman's THE EASY CZ BOOK has some great patches, including a great Fender bass and some amazingly lifelike effects -- parrots talking, car crashes, etc.. Those 8-part envelopes again.
Two CZs, tuned to the same patch an octave apart, give a fuller sound for chording situations.

I love this little guy.
I've been able to come up with some nasty, Autechre-y bass sounds after doing a bit of programming and running it at a high BPM rate. The "chopped" tones get really deep and funky and, at times, tend to change slightly during a sequence.
I've also created some strange pads that veer into analog territory.
Definitely worth having if you're into doing a little programming work -- and even better if you need to learn how to.
