I can't imagine the s-950/900 sounds better than this! For the $50 I paid for it, I'm really getting a serious bang for the buck. I know the s-950 can't mangle loops like the s-612. You can adjust the start/end points of your samples MANUALLY while the sample is playing. The easiest way I can explain it would be to play your cd, and hit the forward/rewind functions wile the music is playing. You can d__r__a__g a sound slowly/fast (via the faders) or skip points in the loop. You can start at the end, play the beginning, and end at the start of a sample (this is just an example). The low pass filter is aaight..but realtime (unlike the mpc's) and the tune (more like fine tune) is a cool addition also. No stereo outputs and only a mic and line input. It's old, so don't expect the world. As far as sound quality, it's dirty. Nice and dirty. 12bit mode is short, but adds a nice touch to you samples. Crunchy with a touch of resonance. 8bit mode is flat out grime time. There is nothing nice about 8bit on this machine (I love it). Crunchy like corn flakes with no milk, it will make the drums stand out like Bin Ladden in New York City. The record level knob is touchy, so you may have to keep it low. Play around with the setting to get a nice signal going into, and out of it, and you will be rewarded. You simply can't buy any other sampler for this price and get the same results. Flat out. And I'm not just saying this because I own it.

wacky, tacky outputs easy to use flashback to the days when electronic music was fun,new an exciting to make, better than an ensoniq mirage even though i like my mirage for sound reasons ,the 612 is just like playing a cartgridge for your atari 2600 are you old enough to remember those days my friend???

What a beast of a machine. Dirt cheap now a days aswell. The unit itself doesn't save samples, you'll need the quick disk drive for that, so make sure u can track one down before buying( i got my s612 and disk drive for £60, what a bargain!). Down falls are godamn quick disks. They are so hard to get now a days and you just won't be able to get all of that important sample in the memory. But hey, don't use it for loops, thats what my s900 is for. This monster is great for leads and basses and just random noises. Analogue filter, thats what all akai samplers should have. A PHAT MONSTER!!!!!!!!!

S612s are so much fun! Sure they're old, limited, the disk drives fail, and the disks are hard to find, but they're so easy to use. There is nothing complicated about them, so the technology doesn't get in the way of the experimentation and inspiration.
I wanted an S612 with the MD280 drive since they came out almost 20 years ago. I finally got the set on ebay 3 and 1/2 years ago, and loved it so much I have bought 4 more S612s and 5 more MD280 drives since then (I also decided to stock up in case I need to cannibalize any for parts).
Does someone need this many S612s and MD280s? No, but its my money and I like them. You don't need top of the line equipment to make great music, just inspiration and talent(which I may or may not have).
Get an S612 and see for yourself. Run your samples through an Akai AX-60 or another filter, or effect pedals, or don't run them through anything at all. Play them forward or backwards. Loop them if you want. No matter what you do you will have tons of 8-bit fun!
