Melodious Rex a hobbyist user from USA writes:
I bought this off eBay a few months ago for $300. Many presets had been changed for the better with some cool space themed stuff and Bjork sounds. This synth is very similar sound-wise to its CEM 3394 chip sharing brethren: Akai's AX60, and Sequential's SixTrack, MultiTrack, and Max. Chorus is cleaner than the AX60, and editing is easier than the SixTrack. Overall, the sound is cool, with bass sounds being the real standouts. Some fairly wild sound effects can be created as well - something VCOs just do better.

80s era 73 key synths are not common, but as this one doubles as a controller, it's quite nice actually - great for pianos. Another nice feature of the 6 octave keyboard is the split - allowing 3 octaves for each.

This was my first synth. At the time I thought I was buying an alternative as I couldn't afford a DX7 but boy was I wrong. It only had 6 note polyphony and the sounds were not all that interesting and so I got rid of it after 6 months and never looked back. My second keyboard was the Korg DS8 which had 4 operator FM type sounds and was truly a very nice board and true alternative to the DX7. In short the ax73 in my opinion will never be a collector's item or attract interest for most people in the know and seeking quality boards but it is a nice simple board

Olivier Altit a professional user from Los Angeles writes:
My first synth ever (1986). Just got one again that was boxed unused for 25 years for $250! Yes, it limited due to it's only VCO but again it's based on a Curtis Chip which sounds fantastic. Great leads & basses. As a 73-key contoller for my Virus Ti, it rules. The keybed is tight and soft. Solid construction. Rare and hard to find these days. INDUSTRIAL? GET IT!

chuckie a part-time user from las vegas writes:
For the money it's an excellent controller with some bonus total analog sounds. About the only things this machine can do though are BASS, searin analog leads, and weird FM-esque screaming resonance noises. Like the AX60 but the AX60 is capable of sounding much smoother, whereas the 73 is extremely harsh sounding. For the current going price of one.. why not.
