great machine. many people say that the sampler or the D/A converter arent good but i really like it. since this unit has no fancy shit inside, it makes you think and be creative. really. it doesnt make u feel like u r creative like many of those groove equipments these days. but thats what i love about this machine.

I bought the MPC 2000 in '97 because I'd played with the MPC 60 and 3000 in some of the studios I used to work for. The 2000 is pretty much the same conceptually, although the sampling engine is a totally different one. I bought it mainly because it works very well for HipHop and R&B jams. It's pads are designed to make you play and think about rhythms differently then you would on a keyboard workstation, which can be a welcome change if you tire occassionally of playing drumparts on a keyboard or program them in your software-sequencer. I use Cubase for most things, but if i need to crank out a big HipHop anthem in a split second, the MPC makes my day. many have said this before, and i will say it again: the MPC concept is still unbeatable when it comes to MIDI-timing. I don't know why and I cannot back this up with actual figures, but use your ears and you will agree. On the downside, it's groove is quite characteristic and might not suit every type of music you want to make. But all in all it is still a very desirable box for those who want to move the crowd. By the way, I've owned mine for four years and the display is now deteriorating more rapidly all the time. going to need to replace it soon, which will run me about $200.

I've owned my 2000 since '98. It's pretty much all I use aside from standard outboard effects, mixers, compression, etc... I will say for sample based music that in my experience, I can't complain about the sample quality. I have used the ASR-x the roland ms-1(my 1st sampler). I will say I do wish it had different sampling rates like the roland did for a grittier feel, however I make up for that with EQing by recording to tape and sampling from that source. I do wish it had resampling capabilities (unless I've just missed that feature entirely). I really can't complain about this machine at all. I don't think I'd part with it for much of anything. I've had it freeze up on me maybe once every 6 months, but I attribute that to using the same OS disk (1.5) for the 1st 18 months I had it. Since I've gone to 1.7 and 1.72 I've had no problems whatsoever. I bought it primarily for the ability to produce everything in one place. Big up to my man that added "get a book on signal processing". Sound advice which I will follow. the more you understand your machine, the more you can get from it. All being said I think this will be my main piece of gear for many years, unless Akai comes with something that drastically outshines it.

I just got an MPC 2000 for a pretty good price. I have had good experiences with the Mpc 3000. This machine does still have the feel of the 3000 to me. It's a whole lot simpler to use than the 3000. The brighter display is a treat compared to the 3000.Also the sample trim screen is alot more user-friendly. To enjoy the full potential of this machine and to give it honest criticism,YOU MUST HAVE ALL OPTIONS INSTALLED - EB16 EFFECTS,8 OUT EXPANSION BOARD,MEMORY MUST BE FULLY EXPANDED TO 32 MEGS,ZIP 100 ADDED,SMPTE CARD DIGITAL I/O AND NICE LIBRARY OF SOUNDS PLUS IMAGINATION TO MAKE YOUR OWN SOUNDS. This machine gives more bang for your buck in the long run once you have all of the bells and whistles added. P.S. if you want warmth set your EMU on fire.

mine has some problems on the i/o but can be fixed it easily.the drum pads are excellent and u get the feel.the seq is ok and tight timing,the sampling is so-so typical akai quality,crystal clean but not warm enough,for warmth i'll goto emu and roland.w/ the eb16 u can assign different effects on each individual out,a better step-up than the other old rack s-series which also can use the eb16 but can't assign effects to ind. outs.
