Pros: The MPC 2000 hands down KILLS software sequencers for making drum beats. I can't express how much happier I am (and more productive) since I ditched Logic and went to this. The ability to arrange sequences by pattern instead of in a linear fashion suits my style(jungle-ish) much better than the piano-roll style sequencing that most soft sequencers use, and for some reason, it just sounds "tighter" to me. The note variation slider is also great... now it just needs 5 more of 'em :-) It's also innovative of Akai to allow the pads to be used to mute sequences (like the mute buttons on an MMT8, but with many more)... great for building up tracks live. You can have it auto assign the pads chromatically for use as a MIDI keyboard too.
Cons: The sampler is pretty much a joke. It's great for drums, not so good for anything else. Contrary to one of the previous reviews, you CAN take a sample and spread it out over the pads, but it's time consuming (you have to tune each pad). The MIDI implementation is sparse... you can't (for instance) assign the note variation slider to a CC message, which means it's only good for the MPC's tuning, attack, decay, and filter parameters. The filter itself is awful. Also, the highest quantization rate available is 32nd note triplets, and it saves NOTHING (no sequences sounds, NADA) when you turn it off. Even the Linn 9000 (it's antecedent, and the MP60's too) could do that! And, the 8meg factory RAM allotment is pretty stingy.
I agree with previous reviews that you need other gear to really make this box perform, but it is a much more inspiring and "human" machine that any software seq I've used and helps me make music that I know I would never have come up w/on the computer. I love it!

The MPC-2kXL kicks ass,I'm very impressed about the sequencer.I hooked up a Korg Prophecy and a Korg EA-1 for fast pounding basslines and some freaky sounds for experimental tekno.This machine is real good for live-acts,like track mute,note repeat etc.

The MPC2000XL is a total pro machine. Not just for Hip Hop but any style of music. My MPC2000XL has expanded memory 32 megs, the 8 outs, spdif, effects card, three (3) 4.5 gig hard drives, (talk about folder managerment), 250 meg zip drive, and a CD rom drive. I use my computer for editing samples and loops using Sound Forge. This is a sweet set-up.The MPC2000XL is the center piece of my studio.You can produce any style of music on the MPC2000XL. A controller keyboard, some sound modules add a rack mount sampler your in the mix. The MFC42 will be added to my MPC2000XL to round things off. Can't get any more pro than this.

The Akai MPC2000xl is Great . It's very handy as a master sequencer between all your synths and samplers :- ) The only thing i regret , is the STep Sequencer , it's not so good if you compare it to for example Yamahas Rm1x step mode ... (maybe it's because i haven't really figured it out yet ; but if i am not mistaking you can't control all CC midi parametres with the Step mode , and that is kind of laim ...) .
Apart from that i love it !

For ease of use to build a beat, the MPC is second to none. Sequenciong is a breeze to work out and you really can be totally oblivious to Midi. I love it for writing my music and also use it as my live tool.
