I used Reason and Fruityloops for around 2 years before I bought my 2kXL.
When i jumped on the 2kXL, i found i needed samples!!! I couldnt layer and rely on effects with the MPC like I could with Reason, however, after over a year with my MPC, i will never go back. The MPC is how samplers should be, and how music should be made - gear specifically made for creating music.
The MPC is RAW. You DO need samples, modules, effects units, extra RAM, but so long as you have a zip drive on both your MPC and computer {if using a PC} then you should be fine.
After reading the manual over and over and figuring out how to use the MPC, it is an EXTREMELY powerfull tool that produces a unique sound that no computer could ever generate. The secret? Akai's MIDI time clock engine. No computer can have this, their MIDI signals are too slow for it.
And now, after a year of use, my productions in hip hop beats sound professional, and have POTENTIAL. I cant think of the endless things I can add to this machine and material I can produce using it..... If you are serious about producing, an MPC is a necessity in your studio.
