I actually cut my teeth on a friend's Ensoniq ASR-X and thought that it was the greatest thing I had ever seen at the time.. Indeed I immediately started scheming on getting one for myself.. but in the end, perhaps on impulse, I went with an MPC2000XL.. The ASR-X has got mad mad built in effects and a pretty decent range of preset synth noises and what-not, but it does seem to have some glaring limitations after a few uses.. The OS is buggy as all hell.. forget about realtime changes, it just can't handle it.. also, I found the user interface on the ASR to be tiresome.. 2 lines of text with a basic LCD screen.. hard to see in the dark. The preset drum kits and synths get kinda boring after you get to know them... The way I see it, the ASR is a good recording machine, where the MPC is a good live machine.. MPC has a much nicer display, pop up windows etc. far better MIDI and sequencing.. At first I thought the ASR was easier to use, but they're both much a muchness in that department. I think the ASRX-pro retails about $800 more than the 2000xl in Australia, perhaps because of the synth and effect component as well as the resampling facility, but I find it hard to justify that much cash.. Oh well.. I got an MPC AND I've got access to an ASR-X so I'm lucky in the sense that I have the best of both worlds.. but for MY money... the MPC2thou....

as a sequencer its ace!! I could c selectable cc fade ins/outs added but thats about it! it's the tightest thing I've ever heard and it never misses a tick, no matter how much data is going through it, no wonder why its the standard tool on stage, just fab trigger seq & un/mutes via pads.. just exelent,.. but the sampler isn't much.. drumsampler ok. but comon at least give us a HP!! I'd think that would b useful for just getting them hihats ect.. it could b so much much more .. but that would hurt sales of the MPC5ooo wouln't it, and we can't have that know can we Akai!!!

if it were just a seq it would b 5 although the sampler/pads/fader make it so much more I can c it as a better drumsampler.. its almost just a wave player :(

The Mpc2000XL is Fire!!! It just made my ASR-10 expendable. The sequencer is on point. As far as hip hop it's a must have. I never used the regular mpc2k or the 3000 but this is the best piece I ever used.
