All right lets clear this up right now. The MPC2000XL rocks. When people complain its not as good as the 3000, that's just because they're pissed because they paid more and all they got was two extra MIDI outs and a way bigger box minus time-stretching and resampling. Everything that was wrong with the 2000 is cleared up in this box except for one thing. Normalization. I don't think Akai knows this technology exists. Anyway, this box rocks. Great for hip-hop, big beat, acid jazz anything. I've done some interesting drum'n'bass on it too. The sequencer is the best-I don't even use a computer. The sampler doesn't have many features, but I make sample based music so i don't need it. If you want to make completely sample based music and maybe even some synth stuff-this box is for you.

the mpc 2 k XL just entered my small setup; consisting of a pc, jv 1080, eps 16 plus (k), alesis 3630, yamaha tx81z. i really love it; it's perfect for fast sampling adventures, and I really don't feel there's a need for those extra editing possibilities. the machine is, for me, quite endless, regarding musical possibilities. I will probably do more things than drums with it. A cool gadget. I added 32 mb's of ram and I'm looking for some SCSI storage for it now. Feels good having this kind of control, a smart tool. I hate the way it looks, but wtf, that's not the most important thing. Maybe I'll spray it metallic red some day... :-D

if the 2000/2000xl is good enough for ?love of The Roots and fine for Q-Tip and DJ Hi Tek then its good enough for me had my 2000xl a month and it is better than an SP1200 and the old 2000 ok it dosnt have the filters of mpc3000 or the options of racks of gear BUT its not supposed to this i a great machine to sample breaks sequence them, chop, filter em and play thats all a great hip hop tool.

I wasn't being moody intentionally, just expressing my opinion. (Which was probably moody at the time - I was at work!)
The main reason for my apparently moaning message was that the MPCs are often claimed to be the most wonderful band-in-a-box ever invented.
The MPCs are good but what I really do not like about them is that they put such a stripped down sample engine in them, why not give the MPC all of the features of a normal Akai sampler such as a slot for the optional filter board? Why not give it proper envelopes and a max of 128Mb RAM? (These two options would not have any additional hardware costs and would suit the MPC2000XLs new musical direction (as opposed to percussion only), it being multi-timbral and all). They said that the MPC2000 is based on the S2000/S3000XL sample engine but it hasn't half of the features - that's why I refuse to accept that they are "the only thing you will buy in your life that you are sure of you will never sell".
Like I said, maybe they'll eventually base an MPC on the S5000/S6000 range and all of the MPC2000XLs will start flooding the Readers Ads columns much like the normal MPC2000s are now.

Yeah, I love mine, but it has a few bugs on it still and one big f**k up on it is the fact u can`t play a note any longer than 9999 ticks - about 26 bars. B4 anyone says why would u want a synth line any longer, let me just say that I like 2 play long, single note synth lines and then use controllers channels and sysex 2 twist the sound out.
Not a big problem, but a problem nonetheless.......I`m working on a workround at the moment.
Other than tha, its a top piece.
