Sadly the MPC2500 lacks SMPTE, and even MTC sync(WTF!). I guess I'll be sticking with my mpc2000xl.

I had a chance to bang around on the 2500 for a day. I really liked it. Easy to use, and it sounded great. The only bad thing, I did notice, the chop shop and Patched Phrase feature was buggy. The effects added a "popping" sound to the sample. Maybe it was an isolated issue with the machine I was using? Corrupt memory?
Sequencer wise, it sounded like a typical MPC. My only real complaint is the price tag. It's 400 dollars over priced, IMHO.
Cheers.

No company can totally satisfy the needs of everyone. But Akai has done the impossible by adding the features that MPCs users have wanted for quite sometime outside of the MPC 2500. The MPCs series have never been an all-in-one solution. They were designed to me that centerpiece of your MIDI studio. Once people understand that, they will realize the full power of an MPC.
The max memory is 128 MBs for 12 minutes of stereo or 24 minutes of mono sample time. This is more the MPC 60, 2000, 2000XL, and the 3000. These units have been the staple of studios across the world with 32 MBs or less memory. The MPC 2500 has 4x the memory of these units.
The MIDI functions of this new MPC is incredible. You can assign seperate programs to each of the 64 tracks. 64 different MIDI channels..MSB/LSB bank assignments per track.
There are alternatives for individuals looking for an all-in-one grovebox kind of machine. But the MPC 2500 has no hardware peer (other than the MPC 4000) that is capable of handling the same MIDI chores with external sound modules.

You gotta love Numark for recognising the power of the Akai brand and snapping it up when they were down. Amazing to think that one of the biggest names in music production technology got to be in such a mess. Anyhow, the MPC2500 - seems like a good idea, but 128mb RAM max? C'mon - that's not going to be enough for any artist who's made more than one album to use live - and if you want to use the phrase samples - no where near enough without loading sounds between songs.
I guess that fact that it will read compact flash might mean quicker date reading times...
