Cheap, easy to use, what more could you want? I use mine for what it is for: sampling found sounds and then playing around with them. If you have a choice get one with a manual and the optional effects board although the board can cost mroe than a sampler. The disks are also necessary although you can use any HD floppies as the Akai formats them to its own file system. If you want to play only CD rom sounds then go for the CD rom version but if you really want to sample don't waste time considering, go for it. The second best piece of kit in my rack. A Korg M1R is my favourite and used the most.

EOI a professional user from UK writes:
There are some great things about this sampler. Its ease of use in the Akai tradition, total compatability with older Akai samplers, built in SCSI, 8 outputs and digital in/out as standard. Oh, and you can put 32MB of memory in it without having to get a bank loan. It's a competent machine. But I have a gripe with this unit, which I probably wouldn't have, had I not also got an S2800 and an S3000 non-XL. People often say that a sampler should sound neutral. You should get out exactly what you put in. Well that's a nice theory, but I say: listen to an S2800 / 3000 / 3200. Those older machines simply sound better, warmer, fuller. This is not some rose-tinted retro nostalgia. So I suppose it must be the D/A converters. Still, at current prices, for the price of a second hand decent soundcard, they are exceptional bargains, and they put software samplers to shame, but so do their older and better predecessors.

Hi..I've just found this link and would love to know WHERE this little *!$@ of a fuse is on the mainboard...and so stop me cursing in the studio. Please help...with description or diagram! Many thanks.... Kev

Samuel a part-time user from Sweden writes: I have had my dear S-3000XL a couple of years now and i am very happy with the machine. But one thing pissed me off about it. And that is the damn Scsi "Hotplug" fuse on the mainboard. So what i did was to remove the broken component and replace it with wires connected to a fuseholder on the back of the sampler witch i placed on the right side of the Scsi port.

I really recomend you to do this improvment for less cursing in the studio =)
