This with a good sound module will have you working with power. The S2000 is a great place to start for a budget hardware equipped studio or a combination of both h/ware and s/ware.

I bought an "SP-303 Sampler" off e-bay. The guy shipped me an MC-303. :(

I traded the MC-303 straight up for an S2000 with 32megs ram. :)

This is my second sampler i had an emax first, all i can say is damn i should have bought the S2000 first, it works great with hip hop beats!!!! It gives a crisp warm sound, without messing with your original samples much. It sounds great on drums, great on bass, great on vinyl samples. this is a unit that i use on every beat and its never let me down. id recommend looking for one with 32mb ram, and the 8 outs theres so much more potential with the individual outs. Its crazy that this unit is so cheap.

Its a great sampler! your samples sound as natural as you put it into it. the RAM is upgradeable with standard-72-pin SIMMs what makes it very cheap to get 32 mb. well, i dont have the EB 16 and individual outs, but when hooked up to an external compressor and EQ it sounds phat enough! programming this unit seems to be very complicated, but after having programmed your first keygroup, you wont have any problems (i even had get used to the S2000 to understand my S900) another great point is its compatibility to other akai samplers. its really worth the money ive spent on it.

Love this machine. Agree about adding SCSI to PC being THE best thing, making it an integrated part of my setup but still definately better than software! If you buy an S2000 GET MILLENIUM...it saves you ages on making up drum maps and stuff and means you can read akai CD's in any CD ROM drive, you can then save the patches to zip or whatever for live use. Would be 5 out of 5 with effects and 8 outs but cant afford that yet!
