The best way to approach the S2000 is as a VERY good PC soundcard. Forget about editing it with the front panel - get MESA II for Windows or Mac. It has bugs (far fewer than the v1 release) and Akai show no signs of supporting it in the future but it works now and is surprisingly easy to install and work with.

What is great about MESA (and not really documented) is that you can drag and drop .wav files and programs to/from your hard disk and the sampler. This rules.

Get the separate outs board and you're sorted.

Top one.

What sucks is that Akai were nowhere near to a Windows version when they released the S2000 but they still claimed that the Windows version would be "out soon". This left me with the pain of using the terrible front-panel for years.

I'm using my 32MB S2000 with MESA II editing software running on an oldskool 68k Mac with oldskool system 7.5.3 - everything works great!!! But what happens when one day my good ol' Mac wil die? There is no MESA running under MacOS 8 - that SUCKS big time, since everyone around has at least a Power PC, an I want one too. I cant imagine making program/keygroup/sample editing with this tiny display, and that terrible data wheel. But even without MESA - this sampler rocks!!! And its easy to get one very cheap. Best entry-level but professional sounding sampler around. Really.

The S2000 is my first sampler and i think it is the Bomb!I learned how to use it really quickly and found the manual very useful and informative for a newcomer to sampling, especially with all the info, FAQ's etc on the web to help. Now I can program with complete ease and I find the s2000 an extremely powerful machine. If you get a sample of an unfiltered synth wave form the s2000's filters and envelopes and LFOs make you feel like the owner of a powerful synth as well. The resonance on the filters unleashes serious sub-bass/bass lines. To me the Lcd screen is not really an issue All the information you could possibly require on any sampler(with a large& covetable screen) is easily accessible for editing.I also use MesaII and recycle on a power mac and Ilove it. S2000's are real cheap these days and to spend extra hard earned cash on an S3000 would be a waste in my opinion.

I have my S2000 since 1996 and i just can say that i love it ! Akai samplers are the most easy to use and the s2000 has a very very affordable price for a professional sampler. I use my s2000 with 32MB of RAM + zip drive + apple cd600e and in further i pretend to buy an EB16 effects board. If you want to begin a electronic band, start with s2000, it's the best option in mid-price of the market.

For those of you who moan and wail about the add ons, here's something to consider. The S2000 effects board (List: $350)includes two channels of %100 editable reverbs and two channels of multi-effects, including reverbs, distortion, ring-mod, phase/chorus/flange, pitch shift and echo. You can even route two external mono sources through the unit using the 2000's front panel inputs. Professional quality effects. What is the problem here? I've had the effects board for about 4 months and I can honestly say that it has made the sampler 100 times more powerful. Buy it, I'll refund you if you don't like it. Just send the board to me and I'll put a check in the mail. In fact, I guarantee %100 satisfaction on all muscial equipment, if you buy something and don't like it, just mail it to me and I'll send you a check for %900 of the original cost.
