I just bought this synth today and I'm in love! Within minutes I was making some deep sub bass lines and cool pads. Too bad you can't edit this thing with sys-ex messages. :-( Anyway, can anyone tell me how to use the tape backup thingy? And by the way...button #32 is messed up on mine too.

This is a really great synth. Heavy-duty construction, nice sounds, MIDI, great pitch and mod wheel controls... Doesn't have the Akai sampler input, doesn't have portamento, doesn't have an arpeggiator... but everything else is great, if you can find one for a reasonable price. More specifications, user comments, and samples of the AX80 are available at my AX80 homepage:

I love the Ax-80 for the bass sounds. It is pretty cool to produce dark, ear-blowing techno (thats's what I do). I even used it for some dangerous trip-hop sounds (the "EG Depth" knob works great!)and other modulated music. I only have a little big problem: I purchased it used and I don't have a manual and sysex data. Whoever has seen that please contact me because I hate the lack of contolling the AX-80 from a sequencer!!!

it is a cool synth with a very good display and can make phat bass sounds

with cool modulation and filter sweeps very good construction some of the sounds can blow your ear drums price paid 350 used had to replace power cord

which was cut for some reason and i fixed a key which was not working by taking appart the keyboard and blowing the dirt out from all of the pads under the keys the only problem now is that the last bank of membrane switches some times work and some time don't especally number 32 witch rarelly works and that makes it hard to use tape to save data this was my first synth and not my last

the only thing that pisses me off is that now i am hooked to analouge and spending my money instead of saving it and whats weird is that i rather have a rare synth then a car i am not your typical teenager

Hi again... just a couple of additions to my earlier AX-80 review.

First off, I said there are 3 LFOs, one of which is for the VCA.

That's wrong - no VCA LFO, and there are actually FOUR LFOs. One

dedicated to PWM of OSC 1 (sounds like a triangle wave), and the

three multi-waveform ones, one each for OSC 1 pitch, OSC 2 pitch and

VCF cutoff. If you buy one of these, make sure all the switches work! A common

problem is that one or more banks give up because the connections between

the individual switch boards break. Easy to fix with a soldering iron,

though. I still love my AX-80 and would never trade or sell it! Rich. ( - note new email address!!)
