I bought my D4 in 1993 and used it with ddrum triggers on my acoustic kit and Alligator backline for 7 years as my live set-up. The drum sounds gave me exactly the the miked up sound of real drums that I was looking for, but never got from small PA's in pubs in clubs with inexperienced sound engineers.
The D4 never once let me down, despite the completely un-roadworthy wall wart, which I bulit into a customised power supply box to protect it along with all my other Alesis PSU's.
I'm about to get it out of hibernation as aprt of my home studio set up. Although my percussion module is now a Roland TD-8, the D4 does some things exceptionally well (great tom sounds) and I love 'The Ballad Kit' - completely over-the-top 80s reverb drama! Compared with my TD-8, the D4 is very lacking in features, which is understandable, given the ten years age difference and price, but I can still see me using it for certain sounds, paricularly when i add a sequencer to the studio.
I doubt I would ever sell it!

I use the hart dynamic set. and use alesis mixer with built in digital reverb. its worth the money.

I think a few of the reviews here are just a tad on the *ANAL RETENTIVE* side when it comes to tone and sound quality. I guarantee you if this thing was put into a kit designed to be played live - 99% of the people wouldn't be able to tell the difference, and most would fall over with a big smile plastered on their face for the sound quality. I play this thing live, in a kit I designed and built myself. It's what you want. The DM5 doesn't have near the variety of standard drum sounds and percussion. I've never heard the DM Pro, but I know it would be a lot of trouble to set it up to have the variety of kits that the D4 has, and its significantly more expensive even used.

I use the Alesis D4 to trigg my bassdrums (2), and sometimes the speed of the bassdruming in some of our goes up to about 16 part notes i about 220 bpm, and the D4 have some problems with trigging in that speed, and then you must higher the GAIN and when you do that it can lead to unwanted triggering... For example sometimes when I hit the snare real hard the D4 trigger the bassdrums. A good way to solve that is to get a snare trigger. There is as voice that does�nt sound, simply called "Silence" and when the snare and the bassdrums triggers at the same time the D4 cuts the bassdrum out... It works very good for me.... Some other things... The sounds suck! Very synthetic... It�s easy to use, and it�s AFFORDABLE! So what can you expect??? I would not recommend it but it works!
