Well here go'es guys,don't mean to sound harsh but use your heads.#1 you have multiple outlets for the DM5-great.#2 the interfacing is great.#3 very very user friendly unlike V Drums you need to be a computer programer to use this one to it's fullest.#4 preset kits are ok but you can change the sounds some through the controls easy.#5 I've had no lockup in my kit.#6 some bitch about snares,high hats,bass drums not being punchy well (EQ)the darn thing, I do and it sounds great.Brings out the cymbol highs quite nicely,like you would with your regular kit.I play live, studio, (30 CD's to credit)I'm 46 now and playing regular, this unit sounds good enough to get our band on a big contest of 240,000 songs 26+32 for the songs entered.Not bad for a cheap unit that some of you say is crap.Well I for one think this unit is great,THANKS ALESIS for your great insite to the needs of the drumming community. Good drum sounds, but very sluggish trigger response. The unit doesn't respond well to ghost strokes, and other subtle hits. I've used the module with Roland PD-7 pads and Pintech mesh pads, and the result is the same. It works ok for electronic cymbals or anywhere fast successive triggers are not required.

I Think that the DM5 is the best drum module available. It's not correct to compare its sounds with Hardware or Software samplers as they are completely different pieces of musical equipment. Now. Let's put other drum modules or drum machines close to the DM5: - Yamaha RX and RY series sounds more like PSR portatones than real drums. - Roland R's (R8m,R8,R5) and Boss DR's would be my second choice for Pop or electronic music. But they're far away from emulating a real drum set.
Compare DM5 to any other synth module too and you'll realize why 18DAC and 48KHz are regarded as superior. DM5 is clean, quiet, useful and affordable. Reliable? Well, mine wasn't until I change it's power supply. This is where Alesis really loose a lot of points. Rubber buttoms, fragile alpha dials, faulty displays, faulty ADA converters doesn't speak well of their otherwise excellent equipment. I Use DM5 in my studio and clients are always amazed and satisfied with their programmed drum parts. Random Snares,Dynamic Hi-Hats, Punchy Kicks (need extra EQ though)provide that taste of humanity so often lost with mechanical and static samples. Missing are controls at least for Attack and Decay. Filters and FXs would transform DM5s into Percussion Mounsters. But this is where samplers come into help.
P.D.Chemical Prodigysts please look elsewhere, DM5 sounds are too obvious and acoustic oriented...Try TRs or RZ or Samplers instead...

Great selection of kicks and snares, but I'm not impressed with the hihats and cymbals. A few extra outs wouldn't hurt either. Great value considering price though.

This is a followup to my original review, way down at the bottom of this list. My first 3 DM5's had the same defect--they would lock up during thick drum parts, and program names/data would be corrupted.
I corresponded with Alesis on the matter for the better part of two months, and they finally found the source of the problem: One of the ASICs on the board had changed specs since their design phase, unbeknownst to Alesis. In otherwords, the chip in the bum units was not the one they were designed to use.
Alesis was extremely patient with my case (as was I), and they did get a working unit (with the proper older chip design). Alesis had impressive and professional tech support, not just some guy assuming that I'm an idiot and telling me to plug the box in and turn up the volume.
That said, I am still very pleased with the DM5. It has exactly the non-realistic sounds I was after (unlike the D4, which sounds too real for my style). I do electronica/industrial via keyboard, so I was not after trap set realism or the trigger features (I'm told the D4 has better triggers).
