I've used various drum machines. Sadly the DM5 gets the thumbs down, it sound like pots and pans.

great sounds, love the special effects, alesis' dynamic articulation is extrememly useful when triggering. i live in an apartment, so i have a pearl rhythm travellers with the muffle heads on, made some drum triggers using piezo buzzers & 1/4 inch cables, duct tape them onto the muffle heads. MIDI keyboard midi out to the DM5 in, DM5 thru/out to a Yamaha QY in. i can control both DM5 and QY using keyboard, and record drum parts actually playing a drum set, which is way more intuitive. then switch things around, QY midi out to Dm5 in, use the DM5 as a drum machine for sequencer playback for all those great sounds. basses are phat, snares are wide-ranging, i love the cymbals, some very heavy and some thin sounding. the drum sounds are not very editable, but you already got 500+ sounds in it, you're surely going to find the right sounds. the manual is not that great, some paragraphs are repeated on different pages. i was surprised to find that the manual does not have a voice list, but the interface makes the voices pretty accessible.

This is a great kit definately! Most of these drum tones sound much better than alot of the samples on the more expensive Rolands! The toms all sound great for an open/ringy sounding kit...but they have no really nice, muffled, punchy sounding toms! Every tom sample has a major "BOING,BOING,BOING" sound after the trigger is struck. All the tomes sound like your playing in a hall with a bunch of reverb (which is great once in awhile, but not all the time) I experimented with the different controls and I can not get rid of the reverb on all the toms. The guys at ALESIS should know that if a drummer wants to add reverb to his drums...he can do so very easily with his amp settings, but if the drums already have reverb on them...he can't take away the reverb! My only other complaint is, there could be some higher sounding toms on this kit! The user can adjust the tom's tuning to a 3+ or 3- setting, but you can't tune the toms as high as most other kits. for example, you will never be able to tune a tom sample to sound like an 8 inch tom, this doesn't allow you to change the tom pitch that high. All the toms sond big and deep and open! And thats great sometimes, but it would be nice to have some muffled or higher sounding toms also! Everything else is superb! Awesome cymbals/ Great snare selection and the best bass drums on any electric drum kit ever (much more realistic than my old Roland)

I was just forced back to the DM-5 when my son decided he wanted to use our Roland V-Drums in Nashville, TN. Once again I am blown away by this DM-5 drum machine in use with acoustic drums, I had forgotten how easy it is to use. The secret is the use of the best triggers (DDRUM), use the settings you prefer in the DM-5 brain, when you connect your outputs to a mixer, set all EQ on the mixer, fully counter-clockwise. This will prevent any coloring,delays, etc. of the perfect digital recorded drum sound. Add EQ only to shape the sound to your preference. When summing 4 ch. into 1, use Ch. EQ to bring out a individual drum, lows for bass drum, mids-hi mids for toms and high mids for snare. When you get it right, you will not belive how great this inexpensive DM-5 can compare with the big boys.

I use mine with ER-1 and nordlead 2, midi comunication seems to be okey, it never crashed and it sounds great!
