earlier I complained about the QSR due to piano sounds going fuzzy. I find later that this was a fairly uncommon problem that has happened to others. I ended up getting a Qcard with piano sounds on it. Shortly after that I got a brand new QSR from ZZounds for $200.00 I just love the piano sounds. Now I have 2 QSR modules. Awsome. I got a blank PCMCIA 8mb card and a resource for sounds, Awsome. If you can find one, and a blank 8mb card get it quick.

I just bought a QSR off of ebay for $189. I have to say that overall I am pleased with it. The sounds, like pretty much every synth, are good, and some not that good. I mostly bought this synth as an enhancer to my kurzweil K2600S. I don't want to sound like I'm knocking the sounds, but most of them I don't know if I'd use by themselves, at least as far as the presets go. But I have done some tweaking, came up with a wonderful ambient choir sound. I will agree with some of the reviews that the presets are not exactly inviting, but after tweaking the sounds in the very easy to use edit mode, I have found that it can produce great sounds. It's just a matter of playing with it. If you need a synth that has presets ready to go, I probably would not recommend this synth. But if you have the time to tweak and program some, this is definitely one for the rig. Of course all of this is a matter of opinion. The best option is to try one out, or a similar model if not available, for those like myself who don't have a local music store around, it's great to have sites like this to get a better idea about a synth you might be interested in. For the price you can't beat it. As far as presets go, the pianos are pretty good, the distorted guitar sucks, there's a couple of good clean guitars, the basses are good, the pads and choir sounds are good, and most of the drum kits are handy.
If you need a cheap synth to accomodate your rig, this would be a great choice.

ive had my QSR for 2 years and its been great until just recently. Beware using Soundbridge to load your custom sounds on to pretec flash ram cards in your qsr which fried my poor synths brain. Using the latest updated software and factory recomended memory card and i ruined my stand alone sound module. Alesis is being very slow about getting back to me via email, hence the angry review. this review is mainly aimed at alesis's customer service and their crap software soundbridge.

Well ,first of all,lets make something clear. QSR is fitted the same synthesis engine,which is used to the QS8.2 ,QS7.3 and QS6.3. It has 16MB of sounds,it can be expanded with TWO PCMCIA Cards,and sounds great.I have 8 synths in my studio,QSR is fantastic for some kind of sounds [pianos ,acoustic,guitar ,pads].If you're looking for your first expander,QSR will do the job with a very professional sound. It does analog sounds too,but just don't expect them to be huge sounding.Tracking generator however is something worth of using,offering flexible modulation possibilities. Its very reliable ,and well constructed. One big advantage is the ADAT optical out.Plug to your digital Desk and forget about any noises...analog outs are also of crystal clear quality.Alesis site also has a huge variety of extra sounds,and with a little effort you can load the Quadrasynth sounds too. Programming the QSR is piece of cake,because even if you don't use SoundDiver,you can download freely [and shareware versions] of Alesis QSR family editor.QS Programming tutorials are also available...it has programmable digital effects ... An amazing bargain at the price !

The Alesis QSR is the only synth in my rack. I have had it for 2 years now, and am just now delving into its progam capabilities. Until now I was just using all the prefab tones and a EuroDance Q card (also highly recomended. I sugest you use the QSR with a PC (or mac?) and take advantage of the editing software that is out there (Q control). then you can see all the aspects of the tones your tweaking.
