As a bass player preparing backing sequences for a cover band, I needed a unit that could cover almost any sound from brass to cheese-synth to latin percussion, and I've found that the QSR covers 90% of it admirably. The samples are top notch and the preset patches are quite faithful to the sounds they are meant to represent. The additional of a couple of Q-Cards is worthwhile as they have some exceelent sounds on them. Strengths: ambient/texture pads, pianos/organs, strings, mono/303 type sounds (on the Eurotech Card) Weaknesses: brass (too synthy, but workable), guitar (but I've never heard a guitar synth I've liked), big 80's analog synth sounds. Drums samples are excellent but not enough variety - too many kits are just the same kit with different effects. The effects are superb, but take a bit of working to unleash their full potential. The programs are easy to edit with a bit of practice. The manual is excellent and explains all my queries. As for quality of manufacture, the PCM slots on mine are a little bit twitchy, and sometimes won't read the cards. As long as the cards stay put, it's fine. The processor is sturdy and hasn't fall over yet.(touch wood) Overall, this is an excellent all-in-one style package, at an excellent price. From what I know, the Roland JV1080/2080 is comparable (possibly better), but if you're looking to sound a little different, with the QSR it's likely noone out there is using your sounds.

I love the QSR. It is very easy to use and has an outstanding range of capability. I gave it a "4" only because its capabilities are not fully explained anywhere. I've searched far and wide, but I still don't know everything there is to know about this synth. Bottom line:
OUSTANDING SYNTH WITH MONSTROUS CAPABILITY
* BUT *
I can't seem to figure the whole thing out yet.

I am a student at berklee College of music and I have a small Midi set up in my dorm room. I have found the QSR to have more versatility then the Labs that the school provides. I want you all to knowthat It is a very nice peice of work and I use it very often

This synth is the bomb! Lots and lots of clean sounds in a variety of styles. Expandable. Can play Midi sequences without a sequencer!
Plus the ADAT output....You can load your completed sequence onto a PCMCIA card, and walk your QSR into the studio and drop your tracks direct to ADAT....cool.
I had a NanoSynth, for 2 days, and traded for the big brother, no regrets. I haven't tried to program it yet to see what it's guts yield, but the presets sound great!
