I used to own a Mark III Odyssey but was stupid and sold it. I've since owned an Axxe (which sounds very nice but like all 1 osc synths is a little too limited in what it can do) and have used a 2600 quite a bit. But I'll be trading my Axxe plus a couple of hundred Canadian towards another Mark III Odyssey, and I'm very pleased about that. 2600's are way, way overpriced these days ($2500 US seems to be the going rate now for one in good condition - you've got to be joking!). So pick up an Odyssey in good condition for $500-550 US and get the same sound (albeit less flexibility) for 1/5 of the price. And Odyssey's are a lot cheaper to fix if something goes wrong. You don't always have to have the biggest and most expensive synths to make great sounds and great music. The only reason professional groups buy the biggest units is because they can, not because they have to. The Odyssey is to the 2600 what the Prodigy is to the Minimoog - basically the same sound with less flexibility. But flexibility can be limiting because you have so many possibilities that you get less done in the end, which is why I no longer own a Matrix-12 or a Memorymoog or why I never bought a 2600. In my opinion, they're more trouble than they're worth: expensive to buy, expensive to have repaired, difficult to repair, difficult to move around (ie to the studio), costly to maintain, difficult and time consuming to program, etc. Don't get me wrong, they are fantastic instruments but what is most important is using them to their fullest potential and that becomes more and more difficult and time consuming with the biggest and best equipment. So my advice is to buy synths that you're really going to be able to use and stick with them until you're a pro (I'm speaking from experience).
Oh yeah, and the Odyssey is a great sounding machine and probably the most flexible 2 osc synth out there. Gets full marks!

Hey! I am only a young 20-year-old man! And I have a great collection of vintage gear. I have a Korg MS-20 and many other synths and drum machines. But I have a splendid analogue synth. It's an ARP Odyssey MKII and I have MIDI in it in OMNI OFF Mode! It's really a great synth and one of the best sounds I made with it were done with the sample and hold. I also encourage you to try to detune the oscillators and play with the ring modulator .... But the Odyssey has a shortcoming : it is not aggressive enough and the sound is maybe a bit too clean... By the way I compose Hard Tekno and Hardcore tracks. By the way .... do you have a Polivoks? If yes please contact me ==> I am looking for buying one.

I had one of thease bad boys when i was young and stupid,I love this beast and wish i could find one cheape.Sorry to say I sold mine for $15.00 to buy drugs, like the dumb ass I was!!Needless to say I kick myself in the face every day for that.Drugs suck!!!!!!NEVER AGAIN!!!

I simply love this Beast!!! - Though mine is in a condition like brand new, you should be aware that there are quite a lot broken, cranky, noisy, fuzzy-slider ARP's traded. Never send it by mail. Visit the Owner and CHECK !
ARP ODYSSEY = FUN THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH ELECTRICTY :)

Mike sums it up nicely,, These things are fitted with KEYS and are meant to be played!, I`ve never bothered to mod my Whiteface Mk1 with CV/Gate.. The Mk1 has a 12db filter and sounds "different" to the 24db later models not necessarily better as mike says.. this myth about it being fatter is probably down to the fact that the bass end stays intact when the resonance is cranked up due to the 12db response..
there`s also a load of crap spurted about some Mk1`s having a Moog filter (especially in Mark Vail`s Vintage synths book!), nope, the Moog ladder appeared in a certain small batch of Mk2`s, again a different slant on the Odyssey sound.. all have excellent mod routings and capable of sooo much.
